This spring I cut down my Musa Basjoo dead stalks like I always have done every spring and left them to rot by the plants. My dog decided to eat part of one of the stalks and it blocked his intestine up. He had to have a $4000 emergency surgery to remove the bulk in his intestine and a foot of his intestine removed. Please make sure that your pets DO NOT eat them. When the vet pulled out the banana plant he kept telling me that is was string that he had eaten. I went in and looked at it and sure enough it was the stringy fiber from the banana plant.

Wow. Hope your dog is doing better and best wishes for a speedy recovery. I can imagine though that this can happen with any banana stalks eaten, not just Basjoo.

I'm glad I don't have a banana eating dog no more.. Hope your dog is doing much better. I bet next time you cut the stalks into much smaller pieces.. :^)

My GSP has a bad habit of peeling bananas when I'm not watching him. I've pulled long strands out of his mouth a few times. Hope your dog is doing better. Any pictures of him?

Back in November my two labs ate my basjoo. Right before i was taking them to south dakota for a pheasant hunt. They were fine luckily but then they turned their attention on my porch and chewed all of the lattice work off. Dogs can be a pain to a home owner but couldn't live without them.
