My Spirals have been blooming for about a month now. The lack of Winter helped a lot. This is another full shade bloomer! Mine are scarlet colored. I have a Peacock that hasn't died down in two years.

Abnshrek,
What is that in the first picture top just left of center. It looks like a Camel laying there!
What is the name of the Ginger? Is it the Spiral Ginger?
Can you pull back andget a picture of the whole thing? Is it the same one from post 7?

I wonder how many different Spiral Gingers there are and how many will live in 8b. My Spirals quit blooming about two weeks ago but started early summer and bloomed throughout.
Nice Monkey!

I dig mine up for the winter.. I see a couple people grow them up north, one guy is in New Jersey.
I think the Monkey deserves a rehab if he can hold off ole Jack Frost to protect the nanners.. :^)

I got to get me some Monkeys. Looks like he's been around awhile. Is he Fibeglass or ??? Do you know who has them and the costs.
I have a guy that does air brush work. He could do him right! He painted a childrens toy alligator rocker for me and made it Alligatorish! Painted one of those race car beds and put flames on it, headlights and other details. The boy believed he was sleeping in a race car. OK he was only three but you get the point.

Michael,
You're growing Costus Speciosus and it should be hardy in your zone in the ground. You might try leaving some out to find out if it will come back. It is reportedly hardy down to zone 8. Most costus can be propogated by cutting the stalk at the ground, cutting off the flower, and then dividing the stalk into several sections. Plant the sections horizontally and new growth will grow up from the joints, similar to suger cane. That's a great looking specimen in your last picture.

That is good news. I have quite a few that I will try that with.
Thanks

Darkman,
You should wait until the spring to try the propogation method I described. You probably don't have enought time left in your growing season.

Most likely. You can cut the whole stalk to the ground, remove all the leaves, make a trench a couple of inches deep and lay the whole stalk in the trench, cover up with dirt. Costus will root from the stalk at the knots(just like sugar cane). It will take the rest of the summer but you should see new growth.

Well the stalk has sent up one shoot so far at the far bottom of the stalk (R).. Hopefully more will show up (to the Left).. :^)
