View Full Version : A Question About Palms

I'd like to box up some Roystonea Borinquena and was wondering if
they can be severely pruned. The small ones will easily fit in a large
Flat Rate Box, but a 9' plant would have to be trimmed to 16".
How much can a palm be trimmed and still survive?

Central spear mustnt be damadged. Oposite to bananas less triming is better.

Do they produce pups? It sounds like the mother is to big to ship but the pups aren't. OR maybe you can TC them or take cuttings. I don't know, guess it depends on how desperate the situation is. If time is an issue, try TC, plants grow faster with that method.

Nope.
Bare rooting seedlings is ok, so long as the roots are immediately covered with sphagnum moss. Bigger than seedlings like the bigger one in the photo is a bit dicey. Leaving the roots bare is asking for trouble.

Which end do you propose to trim off?
The one, which leaves you without leaves or the one, which leaves you without roots? :)

Which end would you recommend?

I am almost certain, that either way it would not survive. Therefore I would forget about shipping it
altogether :(

Tried the one, which leaves no leaves.

Over 10 foot fronds were removed along with a 1 foot section of the trunk.

Okay, K J, now I am completely certain, that I was wrong :)
Congratulations! That shows, that it was worth the try, but you had a 9' palm to lose.
In my HZ 6 conditioned books, that is a lot to wager.
Best,
Olaf

It's not out of the jungle yet, it's only been 2 weeks but it is a good sign the new growth has turned green.
That palm lost 40% of it's trunk and if it survives the next palm will loose 70%.
There are thousands of this palms and their really nothing more than a big weed.

What is a weed to you sounds like a treasure plant here. :)
I have sown four palms in fall 2011. Two did not come up at all and the other two are now
almost six inches high :ha:
No problem getting those to fit into a shipping container :ha:

IMO, a weed is any plant growing in an undesirable area.
Roystonea Borinquena are beautiful palms.
