Hello everyone,

I hope that this helps me and my wife with growing bananas. We purchased a California Gold last year had it in a pot until mid summer then planted it in the ground. We cut it back 3' from the ground wrapped the trunk with bubble wrap covered with mulch and leaves but it hasn't come back yet. My wife is really worried that it didn't survive. So I thought maybe this is the place to find out just what kind of banana tree to plant and how to take care of it so it will grow and produce fruit. Bill & Tasha in Roxboro NC

Welcome, and good luck also! California Gold are a pretty good choice, though some do experience them to be no better than some other cold hardy varieties, so, we'll see I guess. I've got one as well and will be comparing its growth, pupping, hardiness, and fruiting reliability against many other "hardy" fruiting varieties.

It may take a while yet for the ground to warm up enough for the plant to start coming back vigorously, so don't be too fast to trash anything just yet.
Give it a good splash of fertilizer though, specific mix/blend not overly important right now but a higher level of potassium ('K') would be appreciated.
