I contacted the company who supplies the banana plants to my local supermarket where i bought it from, for identification purposes. He told me it was a Dwarf Cavendish, I have pictures in my gallery. The pot i had got the plant in said do not eat. When i asked the supplier he said the supermarket asked him to put that on, and that i should research it myself to decide whether or not i wanted to eat the fruit.
So can I?

'Dwarf Cavendish' are actually grown commercially for fruit here in Greece and the Canary Islands, and they are pretty good taste wise.
The reason for the "do not eat" label could be to warn costumers that this plant is not intended to be consumed and that its not fit for consumption as its almost certainly treated with various toxic agrochemicals. However,if from now on you grow it without such toxic products,by the time it fruits,it will have mostly gotten rid of them and its fruit should be fine for consumption.

I believe they were referring to the plant not the fruit. :)

I eat the fruit from my dwarf Cavendish tree and I cook with the leaves.

My first banana grove was 0.25 acres of dwarf cavendish. I ate a mountain of them. Your particular plant, might be super dwarf cavendish or could have been treated with a growth regulator such as paclobutrazol or uniconozole. These products tend to make the plants greener and stouter.
