Last Fall I posted that I was going to experiment with one clump of Basjoos. I left the leaves on to die off and just hang down along the trunks. These guys were about 15' and the clump had maybe 10 trunks. A couple of weeks ago, I removed the dead leaves and out came new leaves! It worked! I'm in the NE Atlanta area. My other two clumps, I did the typical cut at the ground and use a heavy mulch of pine straw. They too have re sprouted and are leafing out nicely. My plan in the coming Fall is to just leave them alone for the Winter.

I left my mat to fend for itself this winter. only protection is they are planted next to a east/west running privacy fence that protects them from the cold north wind. I went out and pulled back the dead leaves and the middle was going strong. We had many many days below freezing and several nights in the teens. We had a drier than normal winter so Im sure the lack of moisture helped keep the rotting to minimum.

Basjoo is can take some cold for sure.

Yup, I have one coming up right now. I didn't do anything to it at all. Zone 5. This is one that I decided about three years ago I didn't care if it lived or died because it was in a bad place. It's not planted a foot deeper like I plant them now, it's just planted even with the ground level. I kept saying I was going to dig it up and move it, but I never got around to it. So I quit mulching it or watering it or fertilizing it or anything. It only gets to be about 3 feet tall ever, but it has like 15 stalks. The ones that Dad sprayed roundup on came back at Mom's house too. So maybe instead of babying them you just have to decide you don't want them there and then they stubbornly refuse to die....lol...
