Once again Saba is the winner. This year i left out almost everything.
Saba w plastic wrap and burlap and heavy mulch did have christmas lights but they died soon after wrapping. This matt is green and growing this week the cigar leafs have grown out about a foot so far.most of the outside leaves were mushy and needed trimming.
Two Matts of Saba w nothing,I topped these and trimmed them and they all show green in the middle on the biggest stems. One of the matts has a nice pup pushin up.
Black Thai mulch at the base, this was two stems about 4 feet they were mushy to about 6 inches were i did find some yellowish maybe slightly green firm stems, the have darkened up fom the sun and heat but I think at worse i should see pups from the corm but expecting to see the stems push out.
Tall Orinoco,no protection. Two matts of these chopped off a foot or so of stem they all show green in middle.
D orinoco, Wrapped in plastic and burlap heavy mulch I did this to these because One of the stems should flower soon. there green and showing some sign of growth couple of pups under mulch.
Raja Puri,3 foot stem plastic "tent' mulch at base, this plant looks good no rot pulled back top of burnt leaves and have a nice green cigar ready to grow whenever it wants.
unknown local banana, no protection this matt always does fine chopped tops all green centers.
Gold finger,3 foot stem also a "tent' just plastic over top mulch loose ends to keep from flying away, trimmed and topped looks good fairly firm should see growth from stem will have to wait on this one not to sure.
Temps were again mild this year and winter was short I have only been home for a few days this year but have been keeping a eye on the weather we had some time in the upper 20 s and many days around freezing but things seem good. I am back to work in florida soon but should return in May to work from my home port,I will know for sure then how all plants made out. If all goes well I will get to see a Saba flower this year. Will post pics if weather gets bad before I leave.
