Default Goldfinger report

Last year early summer maybe July my Goldfinger set a bunch with about ten hands. The bunch had been fully filled since October but stubbornly refused to yellow. The mat survived fairly well until a frost last month toasted all the leaves. The bunch still looked good and I waited. New leaves have come from the unfruited P-stems and I hoped they would mature.

Well I've been eating off that big bunch of Gold Fingers for about a week now. Almost every one of them split which requires a little surgery with your thumb to remove the dry scar from the split. Over all I'm not impressed with them. They are neater to eat than the Orinoco as they peel dry and not slippery like the Orinoco. There are less hard spots in them. They have a milder and IMHO inferior taste to the Orinoco. They are cute except for the split! Once the novelty of the size wore off I'd rather have a Orinoco.

What have y'all experienced with the Gold Finger.

The ones that I have eaten that were grown on muck soil have been excellent. I had one many years ago in Homestead and was not impressed. I think all the cold that that bunch went through may be affecting taste.

Goldfinger is probably the least hardy banana I grow. Around your area, it probably would have sweetened up better if hung in a dry location. This only applies to winter fruit though...

Nick thanks. How long from bloom to ripe for you with this variety?

Did you have any fruit last year (Summer of 2012)?

Have you had any splitting issues?

How many varieties are you growing and what are your top three?

3-4 months in the Summer, 4-5 months in the Winter. I've got one filling out right now that fruited at the end of December.

Darkman,

It is a newer mat and has not fruited yet. I have 16 types now, downsized from twenty something. I couldn't pick three.
