I found a Hawaiian Papaya at Sprouts today. The Barcode says Cole Hawaiian Premium # 4394.
Tried to research it online, what kind it might be and if GMO or not. Anybody have an idea? Barcode reader on phone indicates no information found.

Aren't most if not all Hawaiian varieties GMO? Or is it just one variety, and the people talking about them are unaware of the diversity in Papayas?

It's a Kapoho Solo.
The first link gives descriptions of 4 types, 3 of them are stated as being "genetically engineered". No such statement in the description of the Kapoho Solo.

This is the company that sells what you bought "cole".

The 4394 is the PLU (price Look Up).

Kapoho is just down the road from me. Neat to think of where they end up.

Agricultural Diagnostic Service Center - Seed Program (http://www.ctahr.hawaii.edu/seed/seeds.asp#papaya) @Ilia: no, the link from the University of Hawaii shows you that for example Sunrise, Sunset and x-77 are not GMO. I do have some seedlings going of these.
@dangermouse: thanks for your links, but what makes you think that the papaya in question is a Kapoho Solo? Sprouts did not claim it to be organic. It seems that Calavo bought Cole but I do not see them growing Kapoho Solo exclusively.

I too am interested in what makes Dangermouse believe that it is Kapoho Solo. I'd like to believe it is since I have about 150 seedlings from that same fruit that I bought from Sprouts. Thanks, Richard
