I have been looking for an Ensete Ventricosum 'Maurelii' for almost a year and finally ran across one at one of my local garden centers. It is a 5 gallon beauty that is about 3-4' in overall height. They are asking $24.95 for them. I realize my location (SE TN) plays a determining factor, but isn't this a decent price? I also know that with me wanting one, I naturally would think this is a "super" good deal. What's ya think?

I think its a matter of whether your willing to pay what there asking for what you want. I have paid about the same price for some bought online that were smaller than the ones your asking about. I live were most things exotic arent available in the garden centers... so when I see something unique to my area... I generally buy it unless the cost is beyond reason.... Go for it:2208:

Yes, that's a good price, especially for the size. I see three gallon plants for that price here locally all the time.

Very good price , I saw a two foot for 50 bucks the other day. I got mine online for ten bucks ,it's about a foot tall. These Ensete grow fast but a bigger plant like that will put you six weeks ahead for a few dollars more. If it was me I'd buy two yesterday :-)

For a nursery that is about the right price. At the Home Depot's out here in my area. They are 19.95 for a 5 gallon. If your have a Home Depot or Lowes, you might want to check them out.

Thanks for the input folks... I went ahead and drove back over and picked one up. Now I will be potting it up in a 45 gallon pot. This way I will be able to bring it into my garage this fall to overwinter.... I would like to ask something else while I have your attention. Will direct sun be best to make sure I keep the deep red coloration, or would it do better with afternoon shade?

From my experience, it seems to me that i get a brighter red with direct sun for most of the day. Darker maroon color if left in filtered sun.Mine get late afternoon shade for a few hrs. Lots of water if your going to put it in the hot sun this summer.

Thanks Mr Viper for the heads up on Home Depot and such . In France there are few deals so I forget about places like Home Depot , I'll check out the local one to see what they have . So the advise from Steve is ignore the Canuck from France and listen to the locals who know :D

That's a good buy, Randy! What nursery had it?

Mine gets full sun for most of the day, and filtered sun in mid-late afternoon, and has great color, provided it gets lots of water.

If you have a spot for it in the yard, plant it. They store very well bare-rooted in the garage or crawl space, etc. No sense in taking up all that space with a 45 gallon pot!

The reason I will be planting it in the LARGE pot is because the Foxtail I got last fall from the guy in Altanta did not make it (My Queenie did!!!), and I have this large pot that I have built a wooden box to enclose it so you won't see the black nursery pot and it will look GREAT by the pool!!! Plus, right now, I have run out of room in my beds.... Some to the space was lost because of all the cool stuff I got from you last summer is finally in the ground... I think it will look cool in the boxed in pot... I will post pics when completed.... You know, Cleveland is not that far from you and you could come and see for yourself, bring your lady friend, cook out with my family and go for a swim... Offer is always open, as long as I am not working that is....

I never close it... Can't stand to look out the window in the winter and see a blue tarp with leaves and other debris on top of it and no water. May want to wait another week or two, water temps. are still kinda on the chilly side. BTW, the place that I got the nanner is right off I-75, exit 25. The name of the place is Bryant's nursery. He has 3 others left...
