I am a new resident of Costa Rica and I have been advised by a local nureryman that when transplanting banana "hijos" it is important to do this just before the new moon. Is this something out of the Costa Rican "Farmers Almanac" or is there really something to this?

I very much believe in planting by the moon phase. My dad experimented with it one time and planted root crops in the light of the moon (opposite of what was supposed to have been done) and above ground crops in the dark of the moon (opposite). It was NOT a success that year.

We have been told something similar by Robert Beatham of paradise botanical garden in rio claro. He worked for the banana company in Golfito in the 70 and 80's. it must be an unwritten tradition.

You know I hear this kind of stuff even in Florida. Usually something about armyworms coming into the crops during the full moon of March, or not planting until after full moon of February or having a frost during the full moon of January. These kinds of things can be tested over a long period of time. I don't put much stock in it. I have probably planted suckers during every lunar phase.

Hello chief1701ret

Experiments in Colombia showed that the phases of the moon does not influence the growth, development and production of banana should be the same for bananas. The experiments were performed by Dr. Sylvio Belalcazar.
