I'm happy to be here. I love cooking, growing, and living in Hawaii. I love Cuban food and have a soft spot for "maduros" or fried, ripe, plantains. I have more than a few trees on my property, but there's always room for more! I have a website: cookingwithkev.com that shows me cooking some of my favorite popovers, and part of my back yard at the end.

Hope to learn more about how to grow the best bananas in town!

Aloha Kevin,
You'll find there are several active members from Hawaii on here. Most currently on Oahu or the Big Island. If you haven't seen the book "The World of Bananas in Hawaii: Then and Now" you should check it out. Written by two banana experts who live on Maui.

Yes. I believe I met the couple at the annual Maui Association of Landsaping Professionals Arbor Day event. I'm sure the book is worth the $75 she was asking. At the time I wasn't working and it wasn't in the cards.

I asked her about plantains and why we can't find any growing here. She said there was some native varieties growing near Keanae, but supposedly they were t doing well. I want to import plantain if isn't already here, it should be!

I've seen them for sale from Novelty Greens, which is carried at places like Home Depot, Lowes, and other nurseries around the state. Pacific plantains are also available but not easy to find. There is a movement to get people to grow them, much like with native plants, because they are rare and as more people grow them it provides some protection against them becoming extinct. They're quite different from what most people refer to as plantains, more flavorful and less starchy. I saw plantain fruit for sale at Mana foods last week, but it was from South America so I didn't bother.
