Hello all and greetings from Downunder. Any other Aussies on here? Hopefully these lovely plants are much the same the world over because I am hoping you can help me try and identify these 3 plants. They were given to me by a friend who was leaving town but he did not know what sort they are as his was a rental property and they were there when he got there. One has just pushed out its first bunch so I am looking forward to enjoying them in a few months. I hope I have done the photos right and you can see them and help me ID them. This is the first bananas I have grown and I am really loving them, hopefully I will get many more.

Cheers to all,

Rusty

First one looks like a Cavendish type.

Second one is definitely something from the Red subgroup, probably Dwarf Red.

Third one could be many things. Looks like it might be from the AAB subgroup, so possibly something along the lines of Manzano or maybe a plantain.

Hi Rusty,

Welcome to the world of bananas.

Your first one looks like a 'Williams' Cavendish. Grown commercially in Oz.

The second is probably a Red Dacca (as we call it in Oz) or Tall red, Jamaican Red. It could be a tall if the plant pictured is a young one. Does it have reddish mid ribs on the leaves. Can't see from the photo.

The 3rd is most likely a lady finger. Which is common in Oz. Nice eating

Try Blue Sky Backyard Bananas | Banana Plants for backyards | Australian Bananas (http://www.backyardbananas.com.au/) for purchase of Tissue culture varieties.

Check this Qld site for growing tips Growing bananas in the home garden | Agriculture, Fisheries & Forestry | Queensland Government (http://www.daff.qld.gov.au/26_16680.htm)

I would say for your conditions keep them well watered in the dry season and well fed. If your soil is alkaline don't ad lime.

Cheers
