Ok, so I thought it was called a roller bug but guessing I am wrong since I can't find a referance to such a thing.
So this is what happens.
The leaf is coming up as we all know as a tube till it gets to the point where it starts to uncurl and open. This is the point where I see perfect holes in my leaves in a perfect line across my leaf.
Does anyone have a clue what that is and how to stop or deter it?
Since I butterfly garden I am trying to stay away from pesticides.
I may be forcd to use one anyway but if you have a clue what this little monster is I can do a bit of reseach for my options.
Thanks :2738:

Ahhh...so as it seems I have brought this on myself with the need and want for the butterflies...I'll just have to live with it, not really hurting anything just making my leaves kinda ugly...this too shall pass!
Thanks for the quick responds, FFF

Armyworm.
Look for small section along the edge of a damaged leaf that is folded over, then squish it.
It could also be the caterpillar of a long tailed skipper.

Patti, it's a little insignificant moth. Sometimes I use BT or sometimes SEVIN (or is it SEVEN?). Just as the leaf unfurls enough to do it drop in a little sevin dust. This shouldn't hurt your butterflies since they don't visit the leaf anyway and by the time the leaf opens all the way the dust is mostly washed off.
I do the same thing with the cannas that I grow because if the caterpillars aren't controlled on them then they're not worth growing.
Just curious, what kind of banana is it? I only had a problem with the maurelii.

Chance1945...Hi Terry!!
The issue is on my Ornata "aurea" X Sikkimensis that I got started from seed and my Helens Hybrid that I got in a trade, what ever it is it isn't bothering my cannas, though with the last cold snap they don't look so good right now anyway, I'm not looking forward to this coming cold snap up & down, up & down is so hard and confusing to the plants at least the baby Ornata "Aurea" X Sikkimensis is in a pot so it's easy to drag inside.
Ok off to search for some Perrieri and other Ensete seeds. Many of the Ensete seeds are so hard to locate and be exactly what you are wanting...I hate bait & switch
Ok gotta go thanks for the reply :2738:

It's always good to hear from you, Patti. At first I thought you had the canna leaf roller, but with a little more thought I decided it's a different animal altogether because the canna leaf roller doesn't do the line of holes, they just eat up the entire leaf. At one time I knew the name of the bugger that's eating our bananas, but I have forgotten what it was. Anyway, it makes that line of holes in the leaf.
That BT (bacillus thuringlensis) is organic that only kills worms.
I know what you mean with this weather, up and down, up and down. Sat and Sun it's suppose to be in the lower 30's and one day the forecast said the high would be NEAR
50. We've had rain and storms here for the last 3 days, must have had at least a foot of rain. My yard looked like a lake. One night we lost power (at supper time) for over 2 hours.
One of my dragon fruits that you sent me has a new (leaf?). All of the gingers had put out, but then the cold hit them last week so now they're dormant again.

I posted abpout this damage before. It's a white grub. If you look down the side of the cigar leaf you can pull apart the next leaf petiole next to the cigar leaf and see him. The black stuff is bug poop from digesting your cigar leaf. He's under the poop. I spray some garden insecticide in this space and the grub or grubs are killed. This happens in the spring every year to my Ae Ae pups and even when they are 6 to 7 ft tall. Repeat spraying every week until the gigar grows out. I get a ladder and keep checking for a few months.

bananimal, guess I am not dilegent enough to see the one hole that goes threw the leaf till the leaf opens and wallah! A bunch of holes straight cross the leaf, maybe a bit bigger than a pencil eraser, haven't seen any poop. Like Chance1945 we have had some pretty brutal rains. I'll look into it, grubs don't like cinnimon powder so those are easy to get rid of with out nasty sprays...but I so like the hummingbird moth as well that they morph into.

Wait till it warms up consistantly...LOL
All that dragon fruit I cut back when I put it up for grabs a few months back has regrown, it's a monster again...at least this time I didn't let it get it's own way and directed it where I could manage it...not 30 foot up the pecan tree like last time.
YES!!! All the gingers were looking soooo happy with the warm. I was so pleased with my barrier jungle that makes it so I can't see the ugly neighbors yard! Cannas, gingers and what not under a canopy of mulberry trees...now all crispy and yucky looking....Spring is coming, soon I hope
