The weather has been just ridiculous lately! I finally thought that that spring was on its way. The snow almost started melting! Then we got blasted by another winter storm. I tried to leave one of my three Musa Basjoos outdoors with a huge amount of mulch and under a garbage can but I just don't think it will survive :(. It has dipped below the minus 40 mark four or five days this winter including last night. I thought that after our warm winter last year I would give a Banana plant a shot. At least I still have two more in cold storage to fall back on!

A good snow pack might help your hopes. It'll be interesting to see what happens.

You never know what will pop out of that frozen tundra in the spring.
If the corm is in a protected site and you planted it below the permafrost
it might surprise us and pop up .:)
I got my fingers crossed.

The sad thing is that it isn't an unusual event for it to get this cold here in the winter. On the bright side it's warming up finally! Plus our beautiful summers almost make up for the bitter winters. Almost. I guess I'll see what spring brings! BTW we don't have permafrost here but the frost can go down pretty deep depending on the snow cover. Our weather is just extreme. In October it went from 30*C to below freezing and snowing in just two days.thats got to be some kind of record

Yeah, I'm with ya. We're expecting another snow storm tonight through tomorrow. Reports I've seen say around 6 inches.....so nothing to write home about, but just keeps us reminded that spring is NOT here yet. We need the moisture anyway, so it's not a big deal to me.

Just keep positive....that's how I get through winter each year. Remember that you have to have the bad to truly appreciate the good things in life! :) Stay warm!

We need the moisture too, so it's good that we are getting this much snow. The funny thing is that we had the worst flood our Provence had seen since the flood of the century in 2011 but it didn't rain one drop from July to the middle of August last summer. I highly doubt the banana is still alive, it was really just an experiment, but who knows what spring will bring!

Wow, and I thought that +40F was cold! I feel your pain even though the foot of snow we had 2 weeks ago melted pretty fast, it is still far from mild outside and it will be several weeks before things start to show life again. The tree buds are getting larger, but the forecast is for clouds, rain, and some mix of snow for the next week (that pattern will probably continue until at least the first part of March). I just want to take my plants back outside for the summer!

That's funny. Here in NorCal the winter is unusually warm and back home in SoCal the winter is unusually cold. There was even one of those freak frosts down there.

The weather is warming up now. Our highs for the next week are supposed to be between -3 and +2C. Finally some positives! I think that was the last cold spell for the year. It can get cold in March but never that cold. It will still be a few months till the big oaks around here turn green though .I can't wait until spring!Hopefully it comes early for everyone!
