Hello,

I'm new to the forum and don't know exactly how this works but was wondering if anyone has tried the Queen variety pineapples. I'm currently growing the smooth cayanne, sugarloaf, and MD-2 varieties and was wondering how the Queens taste? I have recently grown a passion for pineapples and my mission is to grow and try as many varities as possible. Thanks, hope to hear from someone soon.

I only grow Smooth Cayenne and Natal Queen. Have yet to fruit the Natal Queen. The Smooth Cayenne is hands down the best fruit of any sort I've ever tasted. What a difference letting them ripen on the plant and eating withing hours of harvesting makes!

Hello & Welcome. I grow several, they are easy to grow, but haven't fruited any as of yet. :^)

Yeah the smooth cayenne are pretty tasty, the MD-2 variety seems to taste the best though (only my opinion). I have herd the natal queens are really good as well but can't seem to get my hands on any pups. I will upload some pics of my MD-2 that is currently flowering.

I use an apple core placed in 2 year old plants to force the plant to bloom.

Plant is flowering. The plant is quiet large I'd say 6'x6' in diameter.

Crowns are a whole lot larger on fully ripened pineapples versus the store bought.

No the photo is not photo shopped. The lens had been touched with my finger before taking the pic. I took the picture on my travertine deck. I have about 50 pineapples flowering right now and should have some pic's of them on the stock soon. I wish i could photoshop that good though, lol.

Does anyone have Natal Queen slips/suckers? I would be willing to trade or buy.

Is that picture sugarloaf?

The pineapple in the picture is of the MD-2 variety. Sugarloaf pineapples tend to be more conical in shape. I have a lot of sugarloafs growing and will post pictures once they fruit.

I have a bunch of sugarloafs as well (300), I had a small crop 12 months after planting and the pineapples were mostly on the small side. The ones that didn't fruit last year are fruiting this year. I have about 10 MD-2s, they seem to produce really nice fruit. Have you had any issues with mealybugs?

pineapple305

Mealy bugs are only a problem if you let ant colonies develop. I keep a the mealy bugs away by keeping the ants away. The MD-2s are rather hardy and can handle almost anything.

Thanks for the info, it saved me the time of learning it on my own.

I have been thinking about growing pineapples as a second crop, but

need my ants more than I need pineapples.

Why do you need ants?

I've got 5 growing that I started from Del Monte Gold crowns. They're all doing well. This one is a year old tomorrow.

Thanks. Your picture is also very nice. I can't get over how big the crown is! This fruit is about 7 weeks old. How long do you think till it's ripe? This is the first one I planted. I have 4 more plants a few months apart.

Where are you located? I have two that have survived two winters in the basement with poor light. One is much bigger than the other. With our cold winters I am doubting I'll ever get fruit.

I'm in Vero, Fl. It's a bit warmer here. I threw an old sheet over them the few cold days we had.

you can always give them a dose of calcium carbonate to speed things up.

Don't want to speed it up. Just wondering how long this variety takes to fully ripen.

To answer my own question, it was fully ripe June 3. So it took about 3 months from flower to harvest. I let it stay on the plant until the fruit was a golden color and it was the best pineapple I ever had. It's a shame they have to pick the commercial pineapples green to ship. The second plant fully ripened last week and was much bigger but just as sweet.http://imageshack.com/a/img842/2230/p8rz.jpg
