Hey everyone I've recently joined and have really gotten excited about growing some great looking bananas, after looking into this hobby during this winter. I live in northeast ohio (Chardon area) and routinely see heavy lake effect snows dropping several feet of snow at a time during our winters. Not to mention temps at 0-F at the moment too! lol. Yet the summer from May till late Oct gives me muggy hot days that I really love. So I've become curious with how might i grow tropicals, and bananas especially! Im Doing my research everyday trying to learn as much as I can from helpfull people around here. I currently have two small basjoos slowly growing in a grow tent in my house till spring comes, and looking to buy more varieties soon thanks to some great info I've revived from some members so far. If they're any Ohio growers out there id love to hear from you and learn some benifical tips to have a good season in my area!

I'm in central Indiana and all I have are Basjoos. I want to try some different plants this spring. Good luck over there, let's see what us Northerners can do!

do you want the banana plant look??or do you want fruit you can eat??basjoo gives you the look..but an orinoco might give you the fruit..not a cold hardy as basjoo and might need to be dug up and brought in..but will give you great tasting fruit eventually..might take quite a bit longer in the colder climates but with time you to can have your own nanners..

Not too far. I am about 50 minutes north of Akron, roughly two counties away.

I was actually thinking about the Orinoco as one of my picks to go with my Basjoo. Growers seem to like them from what I've been reading. I am guessing it shouldn't really be a factor if its a dwarf variety or not living up here, since we don't have year round growing conditions to reach great heights lol

I'm in Hawaii, actually, but I'm familiar with that area. We are having a cold snap around this time, and some days have actually been getting into the 60's.

Hi,
Muggy hot days from May till late October sounds great to me. A banana in good soil can put on an awful lot of growth during five months in those conditions. Happy growing!
