Is their something good about this plant? In HI our version of air potato is a kudzu weed.

Nope not the same thing as Kudza...we have that here too mostly in West Palm beach, south and west of me. I haven't seen Kudza here a couple hundred miles north of WPB.
In areas it's not invasive it's a great annual, very pretty, lush, tropical looking, bright green, large heart shaped leaves, doesn't make tubers because it doesn't last long enough with the change of the seasons the northern folks have. The tubers whole point is to feed the impending developing roots for next year, as the roots emerge the tuber starts to shrivel up and then is abandoned, it's useless and dead (compost) so there is nothing left in the ground to dig up for next year, this is why the northern folks buy it every year. I have one woman in New Jersey who buys a 20 pound box every spring, she uses it to cover her pool fencing for privacy for the summer and she knows her season isn't long enough to get tubers...every March I get an e-mail from her she wants tubers no less than 6 ounces each not any bigger than 8 ounces and 20 pounds sent ground. They don't like the cold, so it's not an issue up north...2 days of freezing weather and poof there dead. Even Kudza is pretty "controled" but a real issue when it blankets everything in site like virginia creeper, wisteria or pipevine
