I established my new farm with pups this size, they seem to handle water stress a lot better. You can definitely use smaller pups, but I have had failures with smaller pups. Plus...Ed will probably have flowers in 9 months.

The bunch photograph is of a 'Hua Moa', not the 'Puerto Rican Dwarf Plantain'. You can use the fruit the same way (they behave very similar in recipes), but they are different plants.

Yes the plants i got from nick are Dwrf PR Plantains & the Bunch he gave me are of a 'Hua Moa' Plant .

I like the 'Hua Moa' as Tostones but The PR Dwarf Plantsina are much better .
I think The 'Hua Moa' is more of a cooking banana ( Guineo Type ) than a True Plantain.

Most consumers in Puerto Rico don't consider the PR Dwarf a quality plantain.

How would they even know the difference in the store?

I would think that's a poor way to make an assessment, but the large chain stores mainly buy from brokers and larger farms with unit price being the priority. Most large farms grow dwarf varieties and many smaller farms selling to brokers do as well. Many small stores are willing to pay a higher price for a larger plantains which leaves a niche market for small farms normally growing the taller varieties.

Many small stores sell large plantains for 50 - 60 cents, but don't accept the Food Stamp Card, so many consumers prefer to pay a $1 for a small plantain and use someone else's money to pay for it. When something is basically free, quality is less of an issue, so I think the store evaluation is irrelevant.

Many people with some dirt in their yard are growing plantains and have a choice of which variety they want and almost always it's the tall varieties. If asked why, the normal response is they prefer the taste.

With that being said, I would think if the PR Dwarf was the "Best", more people would be growing them in their yards.
