I bought some small Red Abyssinian bananas last spring and planted them in the yard in Richmond, VA. I mulched them heavily just to see if they will survive the winter. We have had temps down to 24 degrees so far this winter. So far the plant under the mulch is still alive. Hopefully they will survive till the spring and see if I can get them growing again.
Has anyone else had luck growing Red Abyssinians in zone 7A/B outside over winter?

I mulched my Red Abyssinian with mulched leaves and it's still very alive!! It got down to 13 degrees here in Richmond this winter and hopefully spring will be here soon. I had no idea that they would survive! I am going to plant more this spring and summer.
ok, nice job! how thick was the mulch layer and at what height did you cut it?

The mulch layer was probably 6-8 inches thick with mulched leaves.

My Red Abyssinian has come back out of the ground and is doing great! I am going to plant some more this spring around the yard. Glad to know that it can survive here in Richmond, VA outside during the winter with mulch!
Great job! i'm gonne try next winter to survive some Maurelii's.( My Sikkimensis didn't make it through last winter) I created 60+ pups Maurelii last winter so i can sacrifice a couple :)
