New leaf on my Pisang Ceylan. This was taken yesterday, today its even touching the ground. Should i just leave it a few more days see what happens or remove it? Any idea what causes this?

We have had some fairly hot weather hitting around 32's C (90f) followed by a couple of days of rain which stopped yesterday thats when I noticed it.

Thanks

I forgot to add. It was planted 3 weeks ago and has put out 2 leaves this is its 3rd since being put in the ground. I did not fertilize when I planted it. About a week ago I gave all the plants some potassium of sulfate all the rest are ok and throwing out new leaves although this is the smallest of them.

It has a new leaf following through so I decided to give it some assistance and unrolled the leaf for it. You can see in the pic half unrolled ok, hopefully the other half unrolls itself now once it gets some sun hitting it. Will see what happens with the next leaf.

Looks like a fertilizer problem to me. I'm not sure on the specifics but usually droopy and wilting tops like that can mean that you're adding too much or not the right balance.

Your post disappeared Kostas?

The only fertilizer its had since going in the ground is JUST potassium so probably an imbalance. I just went out and gave it a good handfull of dynamic lifter which is a complete fertilizer (3.2-2-1.8). Will see how it goes over the next few weeks.

Sloot ---- you just added more P with that application. To perk up the plant I would drench the root zone with fish emulsion diluted to bottle specs. Nothing else for a while to check growth progress.

too late its watered in good I could add some fish emulsion on top of it though? Might be a bit too much.

Well, the leaf unfolded fine with your help and others pretty much covered me so my post wasn't helpful anymore. I agree that's its a nutrient imbalance and would suggest to just wait it out now and it will fix. Even though you added some more potassium you also added other minerals which will help the plant grow more healthily and deal better with the excess P.

At this early stage of growth with the tissue culture plants nitrogen is probably most needed.
My one probably from the same Tully source is doing well with the 10-2-22 DPI recommended fertilizer growing in sth Queensland .
Sometimes this growth habit is the result of a lot of rain bringing on a growth spurt and the leaf can't unfurl quick enough.
Extra nitrogen should help the plant keep up with itself.
Good luck

This is what I meant by using the fish. It can balance out the K cause it is mostly N.

You can Analyze this problem to death, but I just wrote it off as a quirk. I grew about fifty plants this past summer, some in pots and some in the ground. I had this same problem on two plants. I thought it was maybe because they just happened to be in pots. I thought they might be root bound, but I see yours is in the ground.

The plants looked healthy and they each received the same attention and the same fertilizer as all the others, but the leaves were growing toward the ground and wouldn't unfurl.

There is a moth that lays its eggs on cannas and makes a web on the leaves that keep them from unfurling, but I checked and there was no web on the bananas.

Same amount of water, sun, fertilizer and two out of about 50 have a problem. Maybe genetics?

Your right I think i just need to leave it do its thing and fertilize it the same as the rest.

Did yours continue to throw out leaves that did not uncurl or just a one off?

The new leaf is standing more upright this morning Ill post another follow up pic tomorrow afternoon should see some more change.

That normal for my banana plants when they first pop out. The one that didnt unfold did that, then pointed straight up for a few days then folded over. The leaf afterwards turned out fine here is a pic. Been getting some rain today :)

Its done it again :(
I might just leave this one as long as its not blocking the next leaf from coming through. I read somewhere that a leaf bowing downwards is a buron or something deficiency and that some seaweed solution has alot of these trace elements. I could try giving it a weak mixture of that then give it a good watering.

Hey Guys
This plant is still having issues, the last 2 leaves the first one didn't unroll properly like the first one that had the issue the latest one has a 90' bend in it. I have read this can be a boron or calcium deficiency. I think the problem stems from it is the closest to where there used to be a fairly large tree in the neighbors house that used to stretch out across half our back yard. It had probably leeched anything useful out of the soil.

I am thinking of getting a plant tissue or soil analysis done. Any ideas who does this in Australia? Does anybody have any experience getting this done in Oz before?
