Here in central Florida we might get a frost this weekend, going to get crowded in the house again. So far this winter all we lost were some leaves on the in ground bananas. The other outsiders were covered and will get the same again. With red tomatoes one two plants they will for sure get protection, and so will the pepper plants. Good luck and stay healthy.

In my specific 8b micro-locality I get freezes even when it is predicted to stay several degrees above freezing; the predicted freezes are usually colder than stated. I got a freeze two nights ago and it froze a little last night also. I have kept my single banana plant covered and will tomorrow night and then I will uncover and see if the leaf that extends above the mulch is still alive. This weather should be the end of the freezes. The florida yellow flies will soon be out and already most of my plum, pear, and early apple trees have or are blooming.
I took in a potted bare rook pear that has a prospect pear graft that is starting to bud out. The prospect is a tree that has be recently been discovered in Carrolton, Mississippi Nafex Southern Pear Interest Group (http://tandeecal.com/page10.htm) . It may be unique or it could be an original turnbull pear, but in any case I wish to add it to my collection of pears.

True --- that's why I have to cut down this years main PK --- AGAIN ---- after major shredding and whole chunks missing. Wind was bad this year. Added up the amount of green leaf surface area left and it adds up to 3 1/4 leaves. Flower hasn't shown yet. But the follow on pup is 7 ft tall and in good shape. It would be nice to get 2 bunches a year like the rest of the mature mats.

Very strange weather for April is forecast. As most of my fellow Floridians can attest, April and May are usually dry. Much to my surprise I see chances of rain forecast through the rest of the week, lows in the upper 60s and lower 70s and dewpoints approaching 70. I'm starting to wonder if this will be the year without a Spring. "Winter" was warm, March was colder than winter and now we have warm humid weather. It's just strange.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news but..........................
The local paper had a long article this week about the real possibility of hard freezes as far south as Orlando, FL.
Attributed to the lack of either El Niño or La Niña weather patterns. They never formed this year.
Meaning there is nothing to buffer any nasty cold fronts that make their way south.

Northern LA 37F Thursday Night and 38F Friday night. I think all the rain that's coming will help nullify its effect, there is still water standing from the 3.17 inches we just got.. :^)

I guess I need to start thinking about some Winter preps. I will build a structure over my two Avocados this year. Nothing fancy just enough to keep any hard freezes from getting to the too young plants. After a couple years they will be on their own.
Not really wanting the cold but from what I have learned the lack of cold the last two years is what caused me to not have Pomegranates and I did not have Plum or Peach blooms. I believe it affected my blueberries and figs too. So I can live with some upper twenties but no lower.

No worries here. Nice Spring like weather. Thursday afternoon can't get here fast enough. Sh*t I may only work half a day Thursday! Get an early start smokin. We had a couple of very chilly days and nights. Felt like 30 to me but was mid 40s at night and low 60s during sun time. Frogs are less bountiful but stupid DC just keep popping out humongous leaves weekly which are now 4' over my head! Apparently she's climbing a stairway (her own) to heaven....

Had a couple cold nights last week, 30's inland and low to mid 40's on the coastal islands. Warmed up to the low 80's and HUIMID the next few days and most of my nanners are putting off a new leaf or two. I had most of my p-stems make it through the winter last year without doing anything except mulching heavily. Had to bring in the areca palms and rubber plants though. Hopefully winter isn't too bad this year either. Always depresses me when the leaves get burned.

do not buy the expensive stuff at the big box.

I jumped the gun the Wednesday afternoon and covered my banana for an expected low of 35; I tucked a few other pots under. Huge mistake! My DC is taller than I am so I broke a leaf tarping her. That was fine except the neighborhood cat decided to investigate. She took a flying leap off a vehicle to the right onto my carefully tented plant. I knew that wasn't good. I fluffed it back up but knew all was not well.

Frost this morning. I don't think that we're getting another frost but I left everything covered until tomorrow morning.
We haven't had a real frost and none are predicted through the month. Okay, my banana looks miserable but she began a new leaf which got shredded by wind so she's not pretty but very much alive. I'm considering carting my inside plants out for a few days and nights; I doubt it would hurt them. (Heck, I still have basil growing happily; that's always been my "weather" plant.) Look in SW Ranches and you will be set. Southwest Ranches is located on the eastern edge of the Florida Everglades, 15 miles southwest of Fort Lauderdale. You can have all the mango trees you can plant. And tangelos, avocados, lychees, loquats, bananas, persimmons, etc. :08:
And Ft Lauderdale, West Palm and Miami will be your playground.

My reports say 33f tonight, so everyone is wrapped up but most of my covers are at least damp from all the rain. Hopefully everyone will be okay!
My forecast is 36 but windchills of 25 for a few hours in the morning. (5 total cold but 2 or 3 are after sunrise--this Yankee gardener has seen much worse and not lost plants.) Winds from the NNW then switching to N; the banana's top will not be happy but she's inside a fence with southern exposure she's on her own. (My last tarping attempt was worthless.)
My veggie "bucket" garden has been ganged up and tarped; it's more in the line of fire for the wind. If I lose the DC, so be it. I don't think I will but have accepted that possibility; the plants in pots under her canopy are very small and only cold winds not a freeze are predicted. I'm pretty sure the 5 pups in ground will survive. I did leave a potted basil out in the open to see what happens. It hasn't thrived so if it's toast I'll live with it. And learn...

In Pace, FL the forecast is 28F, but more likely it will reach 27 to maybe 26F by 6AM. I live in a low spot that is a bit colder than at the top of the ridges. For next Monday night the forecast is 24 that is a hard freeze up our way. I will have to protect my citrus for that. About 5 hrs below 26 F is supposed to damage young Satsuma trees.
Edit for update: This morning at 6:30 AM was slightly above the 28F mark in the outdoor thermometer.

It's predicted to be in the TEENS here on monday AND tuesday night. I fully expect to lose a lot of plants. I'll be carrying everything mobile(potted) into the house tomorrow, and covering everything that I can. Abagnale has his xmas lights AND a cover, and I might be able to put another set of xmas lights on one other banana. Maybe.
At least my Gros Michal's will be inside. But all the Puerto Rican bananas, Dwarf reds, Grand nains, Double mahoi... all those are in the ground. Tempted to dig them up!
Would that even be a viable idea? If I dug up the plants, and brought them inside for a couple days then put them back into the ground? Or just cover and hope?

It made it to 22f here about 5-7am.
I was up at that coldest point, and it didn't get above freezing until around 10am.
Since I was awake, getting ready to leave for work, I got a glass of water and threw it up into the air in that 22f temps.
Do you know what you get when you throw a glass of water into the air at 22f?
Wet. That's what you get.

I call the morning fog "Bob."
Bob's a jerk.
I'm old enough to have heard about FL frosts (and I assume the rest of the deep south's misery) except it seemed so rare before. When once in a blue moon it did, our northern newscasters mentioned it because it meant that OJ and citrus fruits would cost more. That's how I learned about smudge pots (I am old!) and watering plants when an anticipated freeze would occur. (My father, the physicist from a farming family, explained why wetting plants helped protect them.) Up north covering and wetting would help in a one night Indian summer freeze but did nothing long term because the ground was freezing up with the inevitable end of summer.
My plants I can tarp/cover are and not coming out until I feel it's safe. They will probably see the sun on the 26th and 27th then not again until the 30th. Will they survive? Who knows? Brrrrrrrr...
January temps have been average but as you can see on the 17th and 19th early morning temps were down to 43°F which is very cold for my area and a high of only 66°F and 70°F, afternoon temps predicted to be 75-81°F with lows of 56-65°F for the next 7 days. living close to the Gulf Stream (current water temp 74.1°F) gives me a microclimate and slightly higher temps compared to 10 miles further inland.

It's amazing how we got the biggest snowfall in many years and a week later we are breaking record highs. Strange.
I folded up my tarp and am training winter squash to the fence beside the patio. I was out of town when 39F hit so couldn't do anything to protect plants; they were a bit dry when I returned (they're on the neighbor's patio and she watered as I have before it got hot again) so I gave them all a huge hose drink but even the basil survived. I'm getting really tired of playing bee badly on the tomato blooms. No bees and I guess the breezes aren't enough to set fruit. Darn.

La now and the 10 day forecast is looking good.. 27F in Lower ark is nothing but a thing compared to what winter has served up.. Other than Wednesday night no more freezing, but some frost based on low temps.. I say its all good.. :^)

75f and bright sunshine today. Some of my cut down bananas are starting to poke up finally. Even Abagnale is showing a little sign of growth!

My 2 pea plants (out of 12 seeds these grew) are blooming! 4 bean plants (18 seeds--see a pattern here?) are thinking about flowers. The zuke that didn't look like it would do anything is thriving. My winter squash is vining and setting blossoms! The 2 peppers I rescued from last summer's garden are flowering; the ones that grew from a core I tossed in the dirt are getting ready. I have 15 tomatoes growing on 10 plants. My lemon is blooming again! I've been picking lettuce for months. After a year of trying to eke out a garden in FL, I'm getting somewhere--in pots--if we get cold again, they can be covered. Fingers crossed that won't be necessary. I'm leaving them behind next Sunday which means the tarp and moving muscle are also gone.
