Hello, I am a new member to the forum. Well, not exactly... I have been registred for a while, but I have remained in the shade because I donīt have bananas yet, so I havenīt got much to say, and Iīm happy to just read the stuff written here. That said, lets go to my question.
Thanks to the forum Iīve discovered how difficult it is to find the real deal Ice Cream (Blue Java), and I am very interested to get myself one of those.
Iīve seen several nurseries in Europe offering them, and various members that have bought Ice Cream from one nursery or another.
My question is... For those who have bought Blue Java, have they turned out to be the real thing? If so, in which nursery did you find them?
And actually, for other unusual varietes such as Saba, can you be shure the nursery is selling the correct plant? Any nurseries that you might think are more likely to have them?
Thanks,
Pablo.

Nobody knows nothing in relation to any of the two questions? Even if you donīt know for sure, you can still give your opinion. Its better than nothing!!

You can go on vacation to San Diego and pick one up from John @ We Be Banana's. That's the only sure way I know of... :^)

Yeah I'm sorry, I don't know of any in Europe, however I know a couple in the US.
Maybe if you narrowed things down a bit more; what country specifically are you in?
(Your map says Spain...)

Yes, Iīm in Spainīs capital Madrid, but any nursery in Europe will do.
In general there are no problems in ordering stuff in Europe, because even though the shipping costs are higher than in national orders, they are not much more expensive, so it is feasible to place an order without becoming bankrupt hehe.

There's a seller on eBay (http://www.ebay.com/itm/Musa-ABB-group-MUSA-BLUE-JAVA-ICE-CREAM-Banana-Plant-Phytosanitary-Certificate-/130788037826?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item1e739314c2) from Thailand who ships, and I've seen them with Ice Creams. They ship pretty much worldwide but aren't cheap and I'm not sure on the whole phyto cert thing for Spain.

Hi Pablo,
You can get real Ice Creams from Andreas (redflash). He has even harvested fruits from one of his motherplants, which is really not an easy job in our cold Germany. He also has competitive shipping costs.
best wishes,
Markus
HI redflash,
would you be willing to send to switzerland? most of the gardencenters in europe refuse to send plants to switzerland.
thanks

Unfortunately Andrea's Ice Cream is actually a Pisang Awak like most other circulating the market. Check out the pictures of his flowering IC on photobucket and see.
Its indeed quite a feat to have flowered it in Germany, many congratulations Andreas for your passion and for achieving that!!! :)

Hello Kostas,
why do you think my musa ice cream is a m. pisang awak? I had a few
musa piisang wak (the common name is musa dwarf namwah), there are a few differences, especially is a cold overwintering not possible.
I have many ice creams in the cold and dark basement, not one dath of a musa ice cream as against musa piisang wak/dwarf namwah.
Regards
Andreas

Hello Andreas!
The fruit shape and color is wrong for true 'Ice Cream' and if you check the unrobe fruit inflorescence, you will notice the fruits have a red band where they meet the stem that attaches the to the penducle(forgot the proper name,I think pedicel?),which is characteristic of Namwah. The Pisang Awak cultivar sold as Ice Cream is certainly different from Dwarf Namwah but I don't know about their cold tolerance differences. The truth is that my 'Misi Luki'(also a Pisang Awak cultivar) seems more affected by cold than my 'Ice Cream'(most probably Pisang Awak too) but I would attribute any such differences to just clone difference as they do seem to be a different clone.
If you want, open a thread at Identification for Gabe(our expert here!) to verify(or not!).
Best regards,
-Konstantinos
