View Full Version : Guess what this KLUDGE is for!

I put together a KLUDGE to solve an annoying construction problem. Who can guess what it’s for?
Was thinking of doing a contest with this for a free Pisang Klotek pup but it’s too cold to ship to most of the member areas now.
Hint --- slapped it together to help with building new raised planter boxes.

Well, this is a mind bender lol. The plunger seems to be an important part of the whole thing... it is supporting the trash can on the open end... thus I guess that the trash bin will serve as an initial support for the framework. You will build around it to make the trough portion for this type of planter:

It's to bend the wood used for a planter box. Instead of a 90 degree corner.
Or
It's used to bend wire you will put on the bottom of your bed to prevent critters from eating your plants.

It is to make a wire basket to sift soil and or mulch for the raised bed. The wire will collect larger debre and only fine soil will go through.
Or
You are making topiaries and the wire can be molded around the garbage pail.

Klunge has been redefined so many time it is hard to tell which one to use:
kludge
[klooj] Show IPA
noun, Computer Slang.
a software or hardware configuration that, while inelegant, inefficient, clumsy, or patched together, succeeds in solving a specific problem or performing a particular task.

metal cage to keep ferrets out of your garden ?
That's it! Tony said it best. Also Mitchel for the bending chick wire - when I read this the chick didn't register. And H2O and Jodo.
I did the kludge to bend/relax the tight bend in 2 foot wide, 1/2 inch hardware cloth to make 4 flat panels per planter box. To keep the rabbits, rats, opossum, racoons and armadillos out. When the seedlings get bigger they all leave the plants alone. The panels are removed to be used for more boxes or replantings. Glad the bobcats stay out of the yard --- I'd need bigger panels. lol
Got wiped out every single time I tried to grow pole beans in the past. The critts would just bite thru the bean stalk or tomato seedling one inch above the ground.
I built the garbage can kludge to turn this ----------

I went through over a thousand rolls of that wire, complete crap after a few years.
While the 1/4 inch hardware cloth l used is still in great shape after 15 years, but it did cost more.
That wire is light gauge and will easily straighten if pulled over 2 inch fence pole and I don't recall the exact angle we used, plus it is quicker and easier to bend it against the curve instead of cutting it.
BTW, adding some roof flashing will prevent climbers.

I have had pretty good luck using vinyl fencing. It has to be very taught and I usually make sure that there is about a foot of it buried just under the ground that sits flat in front of the the garden. What happens is the animals actually step on it when they walk up to the fence and encounter it as they start to dig as it just below the surface. The vinyl fencing can also be easily installed at an angle... easy for people to get in an out too.

I have mice too but I've seen the rabbits and the rats in action. Our rats are what the old Florida guys call "cotton rats". They are small like a hamster. I could understand if they ate the young seedlings, but all they do is take a bite out of the stalk and go to the next one. Time to start trapping again.
BTW -- forgot to mention I saw a tunnel going thru the box that was filled with medium. Time to get out the Tom Cat worms. Think I will pull up the other box and staple h/w cloth to the bottom. Don't know if the moles are chewing the seedling roots but this will give me a control to see if it will be a problem.

FYI, it looks like you are using 1/2" x 1/2" welded wire opposed to 1/4" hardware cloth. All the hardware cloth I've ever bought was woven like a cloth.
I think it would be better to nailed or staple flashing to the top of the boards and just skip the wire on the top.
If it was an above ground raised planter I would recommend using large clay tiles as the bottom.

Keith ---- Just went out to check the label --- you're right. It's 1/2 inch h/w cloth.
Easy to find and stands upright when flattened. The panels get stored when the seedlings get more mature. Never had a problem at that point.
BTW --- Nick will give me a few ARH pups when they grow out. Definitely want to try these guys.

With so many different types of ARH's, I'm really hoping Nick got a good one.
Similar to growing bananas, one ARH might do better than another in the same climate.
Afraid to ask --- how many are there? I would prefer a dwarf-ish to medium type. And good fruit of course. And I'll trade you a Pisang Klotek for one.
