As I grow Helens Hybrid wich is said to be a cross between Sikkimensis and
Chini Champa, I tried to gather some information about Chini Champa.
I came out with this.
Chini Champa is actually 'ney poovan'
Ney poovan is actually 'Safet Velchi'
Safet Velchi is actually 'Lady Finger' (Credits Inibap)
Now Chini Champa has genoomtype AB where Ladyfinger is AAB. So something is wrong.
Can someone help me out?

You are correct in that 'Chini Champa' is AB, it is in the Ney Poovan group and of which some are called 'Lady Finger', the problem arises when you try to say what a 'Lady Finger' banana is. This is a name that is loosely applied to many different varieties, there really is no solid 'Lady Finger' variety, pretty much any small sweet banana is called 'Lady Finger' somewhere or another. Calling a banana a lady finger is therefore more to describe the fruit in most cases, not the name of a specific variety.

Yes, 'Safet Velchi' is another name. They may be slightly different from each other but belong to the same group and are very closely related, if not the same in some regions (varieties can be named many different things so in one regional they may be the same plant, in another they may be sightly different).

I have never seen them sold in US, although I know some collectors have them here. The only place I know to buy them is from Ganesh Mani Pradhan and Son Nursery (http://www.ganeshvilla.com/)

Now Chini-champa is one banana that *is* available in the UK. I bought mine late last year at Amulree (https://vault1.secured-url.com/turn-it-tropical/scripts/prodList.asp?idCategory=4). It's about 1 m tall right now and just waking up from winter. It was in an unheated greenhouse and didn't have any die-back of the stem. Admittedly, we had a very mild winter and only had a couple of -5C nights.
