My first time building Temporary Banana Hot house Structures to protect from the frost I get in my micro-climate. Built (1) 14' and (2) 8' structures. Any questions ask away. Enjoy!!! :lurk:

Nice job done but I have to ask how your location stands with winds?

That is also my plan. I do have the Agribon 19. How thick is the pipe and how much did you spend on those three structures?

Hey Ante,
Thanks, it was a lot work, but worth it to me.
I had 40MPH gusts the last few nights in my area and they stood strong. I also have aluminum snap clamps that are supposed handle higher winds then 55MPH, hope not to find that out though.

Its was not costly IMHO.
(6) 1" Pvc 1" 3 way 90º elbow (4) of everything for the rectangle structures (4) 1/2" 15' rebar placed in ground 3-4ft. Total cost 37.00 for the largest structure without snap clamps which ran .52 each (about 1"x3" snap clamp for every 3' of PVC pipe worked great. for high wind above 50MPH use the aluminum, about .40 cents more each. You can mix the clamps with plastic ones and aluminum together works great.

Im up here in San Marcos and actually just transplanted some plants in the ground today> Do you think i should winterize and will the newly planted plants make it with the cold?

I wonder if you can peak the top some so the rain can run off ? Maybe make one side a couple inches higher than the other.

Hey Big T. Thanks man. Yes, i just planted praying hands and misi luki. I think the PH was also stressed out with the rootball being too wet for like 4 days, a few leaves have bent in half and have the dry look with rubbery feel. It has been cold here the past few nights dipping below 50 degrees. What do you think ?

I thought of that and I have the front up a few inches higher then the back 2. Its hard to see it in the picture though. Thanks for the advice. :0517:

If they have already grown good roots, and provided you don't keep them wet, those two should be fine without any protection. They handle nighttime temps into the low 40's and high 30's with no problem. Where you live (San Marcos, CA, right?), you shouldn't need to protect bananas -- except for really cold sensitive ones, which are probably a waste of your time anyway.
But if you just recently planted these and they were just separated from the mother corm, they might need some TLC.

Hey BobbyC
as "venturabananas" stated you should be fine the misi Luki shares the same characteristics as 'Dwarf Namwah, which does well in our zones. The Prayinghands Banana will be fine too.
You could use a frost blanket if the temps dip down but the P-stem will be okay on those two bananas.
One thing though usually best not to transplant this late in the season as the root ball usually takes at least a good 4-6 weeks of warm weather (60°-80°) to get established, which has been my experience in southern Cal for newly planted naner pups. Keep the water to a minimum during this time of the year as too wet mixed with low cold temps = brown mushy rot...
If you're worried you can try the Agribon19 or 30 frost blanket or c-9 Christmas bulbs (non led) (25'=175watts of heat) will work fine. I use them and it works great for the low 30's temp nights I get in my area.
Hope this information helps, Good luck
