What cultivars are sold in stores in your neck of the woods? Here in South Florida there is a commercial dessert variety, a commercial plantain variety and what appears to be the red skinned fruit of Dwarf Red (Jamaican Dwf). Does anyone know what the commercial dessert and plantain varieties used in American supermarkets are?

SDC, Zebrina, hi-color mini mostly decorative types for indoors. So you will not find bananas in the fruit tree sections, they are in the ornamentals and foliage section.

Specialty local nurseries sell a lot of kinds of fruiting bananas, usually at arm and a leg price: Dwarf cavendish, grand nain, saba, brazilian, hua moa, manzano, Orinoco, etc.

Surprisingly, Dwarf Cavendish are quite easy to get here. Then you may find a few SDC or the occasional basjoo or Ensete as well.

This is the first year I have seen any in the stores here. Wal-mart has a bunch of them for $9.99 this year. They are either zebrina or hi-color minis but there are also some green ones mixed in. Our feed store gets a few every year, this year they had a couple raji puris.
