So I noticed a coupled of days ago that my little better than a year old blue java banana plant has a flag leaf!

Looks like a flag leaf to me,,
I'm a little disappointed.. o.k. More than a little! I guess the best I could hope for is for it to flower fully before mid to late december.. if so it could work... time will tell!

You should try keeping it. If the flower emerges maybe try protecting the flower.

Thanks for the replies everyone.
Regarding a few of the questions..
I will try and keep it. Though I don't know if the flower will fully emerge before we have "winter" here. I had this happen last year on my D brazilian. It bloomed in september the fruit did fine all winter (without protection) and ripened this spring (even though all the leaves were fried) and were delicious. Hopefully This banana plant can push this flower Asap.. Should I fertilize??
The location of the banana plant is in a windy area as I live on a hill so they leaves may get badly damaged over winter... lol they get pretty shreded in the summer!
The p stem is between 13 and 16 feet tall..
No wonder it's been pupping like crazy, I've harvested over 6 pups this summer alone.
As for it being a pre flag leaf. this leaf is about have the length of the other leaves.
I hope I'll get to see the flower/bananas and be able to identify whether or not it's a true blue java ice cream .

Should be no problem making fruit even this time of year.I think that is the shorter leaf before flag which will come next.Looks a lot like my Not Ice Cream but time will tell

No matter what it is- pre- flag, flag....it is exciting to have a flower and fruit soon. Good luck and keep us posted on the progress. Congratulations!

If your Dwarf Brazilian did fine over winter, then, if this winter is similar, this one should do fine -- it's as cold hardy as that variety. DON'T fertilize now, with growth slowing way down for winter.

Here is a 'blue java' in my backyard. Picture taken today. It put out a few small leaves before this. I'm assuming it's a flag??? I was really hoping to get a flower earlier so I could at least get some evidence that what I have is a true 'blue java'. Growth has slowed dramatically in the last few weeks and don't know if the flower will have enough time to bloom. :(

My Ice Creams have been over 4 months from flower to harvest, and in most cases they probably could have remained on the plant at least 2 more weeks. Don't know if they're faster elsewhere.

Well honestly I can't tell if it's the real deal but it looks to be much darker green than the Not Ice Cream
