Is everyone making it through Sandy OK? I woke up this morning and my bananas getting blown by a steady breeze. We haven't gotten much rain, but I really don't want anymore. I have been pounded by rain this summer on my main farm and parts of the row closest to the canal are flooded. I'll post some pictures later.

Actually we did just fine with Sandy. I saw she was on her way so I fertilized everything, I just looked, It looks as if the rain pretty much washed it into the soil, So all is well . Lost one Papaya fruit to the wind it fell off. I tied my tall bananas together because I have two groups of fruit on them. I am sure I lost some banana leafs but that's to be expected. This storm packed a lot less of a wollop than other summer thunder storms did this year .. But like you, I am ready for some DRY weather.
I got this tree I want to remove and make room for a few more different bananas maybe ? I might get my neighbors all excited again because I will have plenty of Papaya seeds soon and will no doubt plant one side of my yard in Papaya again .. These are not the real tall Papaya so maybe every one will not be so interested in my plants :) this time .. So in short all is well here in Broward county …
Type of fertilizer used was 6 -3-16
And my hydro garden is coming along nicely too.. Ill even have some cool nights for my cucumbers! And they need the cooler weather

Living on the Lake is kind of like living on the ocean, the wind is just relentless.

Maricongo blowing in the breeze, although I don't suppose 30 mph wind is a breeze.

don't think living in New York is going to be fun with what they predict is going to happen with the weather. A little extra rain and some sturdy breezes sure beat what some up there might get. Prayers for all up there.

No damage -- zip. Left the ropes on all the taller naners from before Issac.
Especially on the Goldfinger. Has the biggest fruit bunch hanging that the mat has ever produced. Pics later.
Nick --- you do get a lot of wind --- that's the worst shredding I've seen.

I'm averaging 29 mph winds with gusts up to 44. I have lots of broken leaves and some leaf tips have been dessicated in the wind. It is just relentless.

About the Maricongo ---- leaves still attached, still green --- might be good enough to finish the fruit.
How did the PK fare?
How come the lake birm --- being as tall as it is ---- and the bananas at home being so close to it --- doesn't provide some wind barrier?

I don't know why the dike doesn't provide more of a wind break, supposedly I should have a significant decrease in wind speed up to 300' from the dike. The PK failed to flower. I hadn't had a leaf emerge in 30 days so I cut it down. I found out that there was no flower stalk in the pseudostem. It's very strange to say the least. Maybe next year. The only thing I can think of is that I had a blowdown back in June and I had to prop the plant.

That FHIA-17 looks like it could use some support.

Nick -Trying to learn from experienced members -
What does a flower stalk look like in the pstem - I have several pups almost as tall as the mother plant that bloomed this season at 10 ft- I was planning to cut the pups at about 6-8 feet in order to winterize. wondering how to identify if the bloom is above / below the cut?
Also I noticed in your pics that you wrapped a nana bunch in plastic - what is the reason?
Thanks
Jose

It has been very windy here this week and I had to tie down my mango trees to prevent them from blowing over. The banana leaves suffered severe shredding.
Hopefully no more hurricanes this year.

They show what the flower looks like in the stem in this video
Where do Dole bananas come from? - YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9xar6m86Qh0)
The bunch is actually in poly-fabric, but I do this to keep insects off, and protect the fruit from being rubbed by the leaves.
