I was wondering how cold the water can be when watering the plants. I noticed that some of the exhibitors at the Florida nursery shows dump bags of ice cubes in the containers. There's even a guy who calls his business, "Just Add Ice Orchids".

Ive heard of useing ice for prchids but not for anything else. most things do better with warm water as it keeps the soil temps up and helps them grow

I know I saw it on some palms. I can't remember if I saw it on anything else.

I just water my plants with hose water, which is cold, and they don't seem to mind.

These are container plants, in a warm cellar, under lights. There is only a regular hose spigot (aside from at the clothes washer, which I don't want to mess with) down there. I was wondering if I'd have to do a little plumbing and add a hot water line to the spigot.

If you are that worried just fill a bucket up with water and let it sit out and warm up.

John,
I have this in place I use for my dogs for winter bathing, but I think this would work for you.
It hooks up to your washer hot and cold hook up and they're high pressure hoses and allow you to hook up a hose just for either warm or cold water thru a pass-through type solution and easy to hook up. I've had mine for a few years and no leaks and hose bursting so far. Hope this helps.

Yo Gang: They do the Ice Bag thing out here at the Far-West Nursery show each summer as well. All of the plants are inside for a 3-4 day time period, and they do get stressed, towards the end of the show. Never seen or heard of the plants getting pissed off though. They seem to be happy for the melted water, from the ice...which doesn't seem to freeze them. Of course many plants are thrown out after the show ends, so it seem to be done for appearances, during the show to keep the plants hydrated/

Blownz - Tried something like that. I got a great big bucket, the kind with rope handles from HD. The trouble is there are several hundred plants down there, and dipping the water out got old quickly. I even got a little pump, made for a garden fountain, but the pressure wasn't enough to reach the farthest plants.
Big Tony - Thanks. I think I'll try a modified version of that but, as I said, I don't want to mess with the washer connetions, and chance a leak. (The washer has been connected for many years.) I've got another spot where I can hook it in.
