I have a pisang klotek and it has not pushed out a new leaf in a few weeks. I have never seen a banana get stuck like this before and thought perhaps someone else had. It is almost like it is choked, but with such warm weather I have doubts about that.

I've never experienced anything like that.

I just had DN produce a bud then stop with it protruding a foot out.
It stayed there for a week without moving an inch.

I finally noticed something was off and decided to water it, as we have now been a week with no rain.
The next day it had moved a foot.

How are your soil moisture levels?

That's all I've got.

EDIT i'm quoting a later post in my edit
It's moist, the FHIA-17 that is 7' away is doing fine.

Of course this is true and I realized what a large sample you have right after I logged off.
What a poorly fabricated response. : (

When I have an ARH that stopped pushing, I chop the top off and split it.
100% of the time I find a slug, and then the plant continues to grow as normal.
It only happens with smaller plant, maybe 5' or less.

How tall is it? Any sign of a flag leaf - like last leaf smaller than previous? I've never had any critter problems with the PK. Always has been robust.

Any update?

I cut it down and cut the pseudostem in two and to my surprise there was no sign of new leaves or a bunch coming up the pseudostem. It was strange.

Any sign of rot in the corm or p-stem or Underground critter? Any new pup growing? I do not know that we have nematodes here in South Florida.

No rot or anything, the sucker that I have selected as the follower looks fine. The only thing I can think of is that the plant had a bad blowdown early in the Summer. It was probably at a 20 degree angle with the ground and I had to prop it back upright.

I also had that happen with a maricongo and the pups produced fruit before I decided to cut it down. I posted it when the pups stated to bloom but don't remember the thread.

What do you do with the old pseudostems?

There you go. It probably suffered a fatal crack. Hopefully the pup will do well for you.

Chop them up and place them in the row.

What is a fatal crack and where would this crack happen?

What I know is that the weakest part is where the corm and pseudostem meet. A crack there is normally very noticeable and complete.

Chop them up and place them in the row.

That seems nice and easy, but is not an option here.
It would be like building a housing project for weevils.
I need to break the structure of the pseudostem completely before putting it back in the field.
I drive over them with my truck, this will break the cells and remove most of the water. After a few days it starts to rot and I can put it back in the soil.

Is there a shredder/chopper that is designed to handle high water content plant material like banana pstems? One that can be towed behind a truck

KJ -- must be interesting driving down hill with a thick layer of banana stem sap coating the wheels. lol.

That would be interesting to see, but trying to stop or turn would be even more interesting.

I only do it on level ground seems a bit safer.

I would assume there's a machine something like what they use for sugarcane that would do it more effectively, but using a truck works good enough.

The goal is only to crush the cells so that it can breakdown quicker.
