Hello all i am new to all of this i recently bought a house that has banana plants about 2 weeks ago i noticed a hook formed shape growing out the center that later produced a purple pod that now hangs down pointing towards the ground. I would like to know what kind of banana tree i have and what i need to do... everday i new leaf opens up and reveals baby bananas under it. I live in central florida and it is october will these bananas do alright through the colder months?? when do i harvest them please i have no clue what i am doing here but am very interested in learning about bananas so i can continue to get more..... as i understand it from what i am reading i am to cut the stalk down to the ground after i have harvested the bananas and chop up the stalk and sprinkle it around the remaining plants...is this correct... please any information that can be provided to help me along my journey of caring for and harvesting banana trees would be greatly appreciated

Yeah, the pics didn't work. You could try uploading them to the photo gallery and then posting them.

I'm not sure exactly what it is, but it looks like it's in the AA or AAA genome group, so it's probably not that cold hardy. You might want to protect it if you want to keep the fruit.

You can cut down the stem after harvest and sprinkle around plant but it isn't necessary. The stem is dead after harvest so you may as well chop it.The chopped stem is good for the soil so you can spread it around or compost it or throw it away it all works

Hi Labella,
here is a repeat of another post of mine elsewhere in this forum, detailing step by step the
uploading of photos:
1. Go to: bananas.org/gallery/uploadphoto.php?cat=500
2. click on ‘Browse’ or ’Chose File’ (depending on your browser)
3. Go to your folder, where the picture is located
4. Double click on the photo. That will transfer the location of the photo in your computer to
theBananas upload site. You can do that with 4 pictures at the time
5. Click on the red Process window. That will put the photo into your Gallery or if you don’t
have one yet, will open one up for you (if I remember correctly)
6. Double click on the photo. That will open up a condensed version of the photo (about post
card size). If you want to post the original size, click anywhere on the image.
7. Left click on “Code for bulletin boards:” at the bottom of the image
8. Then right click on it again
9. In the dialogue box click on “Copy” that will copy the Banana.Org address of the image
10. Go to your post and paste it, where you want it to appear.
That sounds a lot more complex, than it really is. After the first few hundred photos it will
come quite fluently. :ha:
Good luck!
Olaf

Manzano. Apparently that is the plant of the day. (See other post on the ID thread today -- also Manzano.)

In that case, it should do fine in the winter. Still pretty new to identifying bananas. :ha:

Orinoco is the plant of the day in Central FL.
EVERY DAY.
I passed up 15 D orinoco bunches yesterday.
No need to protect it but expect extensive defoliation.
This will not prevent blooming the following year.

You are looking for 50lbs sulphate of potash which costs $25
This will supply potassium basically forever for a single mat.
Be aware that the 6-6-6 whatever you see is % active ingredient. (18% total and 6% K)
SOP is 0-0-52 (52% K)
that last number is K, and K is the most important number for bananas :ha:
don't get ripped off buying low strength fertilizer at a box store !!
Discarded lawn waste is the perfect free compost and increases the holding capacity of the (doubtless sand) to keep your fertilizer where you put it.
Dissolve 1/2 cup (roughly 1/2 pound) SOP in 5 gals water and pour near base of flowering pstem.
It's a bit late this year, but that will spur earlier flowering next.
