Hello all,
Just planted three varieties of banana here in North County San Diego and wanted to know when it is safe to fertilize. They were planted about a week ago and were stressed out from the move and the heat (I used chelated vitamin B1 to help with root shock) but are stabilizing now i think. one of the plants is down to only two leaves :(. I have an interesting set up and location, but i need to know when i can feed them and what fert is best. I hear great things about milorganite, but the thought of feeding my bananas with processed human sewage is kinda gross. Also i have a big Rottwieler; will him unleashing his morning rain destroy my fruit salad hopes? Thanks for the help guys.

Did you add anything to the soil when you planted them? What is you soil like? Were these plants rooted in a container or freshly dug?

My dogs pee in my potted Helens all the time (Uggg....Boys) doesn't seem to bother them any, in fact the original plant that had died back and I thought I had lost after it pushed up a pup started coming back up...don't know if I can relate that to the constant yellow showers or not but it seems to not have done any harm.
Best I can do for ya from here

My soil is hard clay with rocks for the most part so i took to my pick ax and solved that problem. Then i added kellog/amendment soil that had gypsum in it to break down the clay. I didnt mix it with the clay too much bc I fear the root rot. I sprinkled a little bit of water crystals in too because of the heat and o yea, on two out of the three i took a page from the native americans and buried a dead tilapia with some dirt in between the fish and roots.
As far as the dogs peeing go, i was thinking too. There pee burns grass because it is too high in nitrogen. Considering the bananas need high levels of this, could they potentially have a symbiotic relationship? Hmmm?

Generally speaking once you see new growth it's ok to start feeding. I add some organic matter and food when planting. I don't know where you're located but in areas where growing outdoors in winter is iffy it's best not to feed until spring.

Guess it would help to read the whole post! Yeah the fish should start breaking down about the same time the plant sets root and starts growing.
I often compost right underneath trees I planted a month ago.
with my well draining soil I have no worries about root rot and kitchen waste provides low analysis, soil invigorating fertilization
I then fertilizer at the recommended rate after the first growth flush.
Bananas on the other hand I plant with 100lbs of fresh horse poop and 50-100lbs leaves. Dig a 3x3x2 pit and mix it all in with the native soil.
I NEVER PUT THE CORM IN THIS MIX, but after I've backfilled the pit I dig a small hole in the center of my new mix and pour some unamended sand which the corm goes into
That way the young corm isn't in instant direct contact with my hot mix.
I fertilize with SOP after the third leaf.
short answer THIRD LEAF or right away at a low rate 100ppm N and 200ppm K dissolved in water.

I use carp in my soil. I use carp as target practice and then go into my soil.

:rollerbananadone:I know other plants like cat (dumping grounds) areas. They have an area in my assorted ginger, heliconia ect area and everytime they use an area it just takes off, I just wish they would be better at dispersal (is that the right word?) Maybe hows this? I wish they weren't so generous all the time in 1 area at a time? They would share the wealth more evenly...
Oh Boy...it's getting deep in here...I give up :rollerbananadone:
