Just doing a straw poll about who is growing this species. I'm not sure if 'Burmese Blue' really counts or Yunnanensis, sorry, but Musa Formosana does count. If you could give the variety and any photos you have, also if you have got any to flower or even produce seeds!
This is the species that suppliers are most likely to get wrong, so if we can kind of supply our own that would be good, right? :woohoonaner:

How are they doing?
Did you grow them from seeds?
Did the seeds take long to germinate?

I have a few types. My yunnanensis died but it was planted in a spot where plants seem to suffer and/or die (Musa thompsonii has been in that spot for a few years now and has survived but has never been more than about 2' high). Last winter was very mild so it is no surprise that my itinerans types survived. Hopefully they will make it. I'll mulch them well this year.

I bought this one from Sandy at Northern Tropics. It's the Mekong Giant. So far it's doing great. Definitely grew at a faster rate than my Musa basjoos. Bought it at about two feet tall in July. It is planted about a foot deeper into the ground, so with that in mind I'd say it is now 4-5 feet tall just with the above-ground height.

I live in Central Florida but my family is from upstate NY...my Aunt in Helena my Great Aunt & Uncle in Buffalo, nieces and nephews in the city others in Earlton & Greenville... I don't know how you all deal with all that snow for 5 months every year...not me! In February I will still have days worthy of shorts and a t-shirt and blooming tropicals happily pulling weeds.
Will you have to dig and store for the winter? I cringe at the thought. I still have stuff I have to drag in on (OUR) cold blasts for my deep tropicals, I shouldn't even talk...my Noni berry is getting big, next pot will have rollers...UGGG

Lol... last year we barely saw any snow. There are benefits to it - it's an insulator. The problem is that since it's more important to keep everything dry, the milder snowless winter was wet. Not good.
I don't dig up the big corms. I DO cut off pups and pot them indoors so that by spring they've grown quite a bit... a nice jump start. For the mekong, I am going to leave inground. I like experimenting at first even if I'm told it can't be done. I have an online buddy trying Mekong Giants out near Buffalo (Tonawanda) too.

I still think 'xishuangbannaensis' is something else then Mekong Giant,....but,...I am convinced that Mekong Giant is indeed a real itinerans var.
Musa yunnanensis has nothing to do with itinerans, only shares habitat in some occasions from what I read.
Some Burmese Blue are also itineranses, but some are cultivar species.
Furthermore Musa itinerans 'Indian Form' is ofcourse a real itinerans.
I'm growing both 'Indian Form' and Mekong Giant over here, still small plants.
As you can read in the article of it's description some of the subspecies of itinerans have long runners, as Mekong and 'Indian Form' do,....but then again,...not all itinerans subspecies do.
Kind regards,
Remko.

My friend Helton and I also growing Musa itinerans "Indian Form" with success in Brazil, in the state of São Pàulo, in Campina do Monte Alegre and in Lucianópolis.
Here the pics:

Huge Musa itinerans with fruits :03: in the nursery of Helton in Campa do Monte Alegre on Oct. 22nd, 2012

One runner pup, some metres from the motherplant, Helton separated them on the next day and gave it me. I planted the pup at my pond in Lucianópolis

My Musa itinerans in my banana special garden at my pond in Lucianópolis, I got it as pups from Helton in the past year, they do make here well because of the half shadow and the moist soil close to the pond. Because of the possible running pups in the future I did not plant them too close to the border to my Japanese neighbour.
You see, that also Musa itinerans can grow in Brazil very well!!!
Best wishes

I got seeds from Rarepalmseeds and sent them to Helton to Brazil. Helton also has Musa balbisiana, sikkimensis, sikkimensis "Manipur", cheesmanii, Helen`s Hybrid, acuminata ssp. microcarpa, beccarii, laterita, formesana, thomsonii, siamensis, campestris and yunnanensis from seeds from me from Rarepalmseeds, Sementes.de and Sunshine Seeds. I got pups and seedlings from most of them for my yard here in Lucianópolis.
Many of the plants are only 3 to 4 years old, already huge and fruiting!!! Thanks to the Brazilian tropical climate.
Also Rarepalmseeds does ship seeds to Brazil, @Yuri Barros, this is no problem for you to grow bananas from seeds from Rarepalmseeds in Brazil. But you also can get seeds and pups from the plants in the nursery of Helton, they are already fruiting.
Best wishes

Do they make it confusing on purpose so you have to get all of them? :^)
I doubt they grow 20' in 6 months, or 7 or even 8 months like they stated on the site however, getting froze to the ground every year.

Austin - I can't remember which ones I saw growing in the field as some didn't have tags by them. But the Itinerans pups I saw for sale had a dark tint to the under leaves if I remember correctly, didn't remember seeing the BB version though. We went in like late August or September I forget. I know it was close to there last weeks for visits. All the plants always have pups with them, and are in the range of 3ft tall. Kinda high price to me for something in that range. Supplier closer to me sell 5 ft plants for there price. But I have all the types he sells, and doesn't sell what PD sells.

'Mekong Giant' is not var. xishuangbannaensis, despite it being labeled as such. It is more likely var. itinerans.
I am growing var. itinerans and 'India Form'. I also have M. formosana in the greenhouse.

Helton and I are growing Musa itinerans "Indian Form". Musa itinerans "Indian Form" does form runners, be careful because of the neighbourhood. Do not plant too close to the house or to the border of your yard! I got one runner from Helton.

Would you think I was sold the wrong plant? Also, what crosses out the possibility of xishuangbannaensis being Mekong? I come across a lot of conflicting statements...: (

The plant was mis-identified when it was named. The real var. xishuangbannaensis is much larger than 'Mekong Giant'. There are other distinguishing differences also. One of the easiest ways to tell the difference is to cut a leaf at the base of the petiole and see what color the "sap" is. Only var. xishuangbannaensis bleeds red sap. Var. itinerans is a milky-clear sap. I have tried to point out this error to those responsible, but to no avail. Seems to be all about marketing.
