Very interesting, do you have any extra pineapple pups for sale? Seems they would make a great addition to bananas.

SG,
Gorgeous pineapple plants, very healthy-looking! Do you know what variety they are? And how do you feed them?
Mike, I thought the same thing and started acquiring some. First I planted a couple from the grocery store (Smooth Cayenne, I think) and they are doing well, then I started looking on the web.
I got 3 of the Kona Sugarloaf variety from Wellspring Gardens via eBay for less than $4 each. They look great, but have a good bit of growing before they look like SG's! I understand the sugarloaf is one of the biggest and sweetest, but less acid than the commercial type. Kona Sugarloaf on eBay (http://cgi.ebay.com/PINEAPPLE-PLANT-Kona-Sugarloaf-DUTCH_W0QQitemZ7710810152QQcategoryZ25463QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1 QQcmdZViewItem) There is another seller that has them also, but they may be smaller plants.
Jeez they take up very little space, relatively. And my understanding is they are low-maintenance, so I think I can dedicate a few square feet in the greenhouse.

I have three typical pineapple, like the Dole gold or what-have-you.
Also have a clump of small ornamental pineapples that I really enjoy.
And, I also recently got a very small dwarf ornamental of some sort that is a real crowd-pleaser. I really enjoy growing pineapples, especially the out of the ordinary kinds.

Love the pineapples. Ate one tonight that I grew. Still have a couple left out in the yard, just are not ready to pick yet. I have a 4 headed beast, that I thought maybe would have 4 fruits at once, but it only put out one so far. Still hoping the other 3 will start to fruit at the same time...

Not sure if the variegated I have are edible or not.
The nursery where I got them left me the feeling that they aren't.
Although, I think bigdog may have the same kind... that's very much what they look like. His seem to have more yellow than white though. Is that just the photo lighting? (When taking pictures straight down, sometimes the color dosen't come out as if you take it from the side.)
None to trade, sorry :p

Those Dole Gold fruit pretty well. I grew one and we just ate the fruit on Saturday. I'd never tried growing pineapples before, so I had it in a 1 gallon pot and still got the cutest little pineapple a little larger than a softball. Tasted great.
and it sure was fun to see it grow/develop all summer! We had it for the last month on the kitchen table so we would be able to keep an eye on it.
One question, the pups from the original plant usually fruit in about a year right, as opposed to the two or three years it takes from a top?
Thanks for your help!

Mine still lacks the first pineapple. Hopefully in a year or two it'll form.
@Bobby - I like to pot mine first, but yup, just plant the head the way it is. I used to start it rooting balanced on the top of a cup of water, but nowadays, I just go straight for the dirt (with few, if any, casualties).
