I was driving around the other day and saw beautiful banana plant in someone's yard and decided I had to have one. Googled about and found Banana.org so here I am. I know nothing about growing banana trees so I'm all ears. Our location is just west of Charleston, SC.

What do I need to know and where do I start?

Welcome from central Florida, all of the info you need is right here. Start browsing the forums and your answers are there.
Start with the location for the particular banana you want to grow, just remember that not all bananas will thrive and fruit in your area. Talk to members around you and get their opinions, there are several close to you or at least near by.
Prepare the soil with lots of compost and good soil. Look in the wooded areas and scoop up some good top soil. A bit of work but you can't buy it in the store that good. If there are any horse of cattle farms close, contact them and ask about manure. If there are any horse people around they usually have more than they can use and are willing to give it to you, with some luck you will find one with partically or completely composted manure.
Take a look at the place you saw and maybe ask them the name of their plant.
Good growing and get your fingernails dirty.
