I've done some searches here, but haven't found a good answer to this question:

I live in central San Diego (Zone 10) I'd like to grow edible Plantains (ok, my WIFE is Plantain Crazy:2735: ).

What cultivar grows well in our clay, alkaline soil? (or do I dig a BIG hole?)

Average rainfall here is ~12 inches (although we have 1/2 that this year). Would accumulation of salts from irrigation water be a concern?

Hate to see a thread go unresponded...
If I lived out there, I would make some recommendations for you, John!

I can suggest to you, though, if you did decide to go out there and dig dig dig yourself a big planting hole till you got down to sand (hopfully), then backfilled with good soil and compost, you would have yourself larger heads of fruit. Guaranteed!
It's a day's work, but a really long time to reap the harvests...
