Couldn't figure out where to put this. But its about a 12VDC 2.25" fan i'm getting from a guy to hook up under my reef tank lighting hood. What can I use to power this thing? I need some type of power source? any ideas?I thought about hooking it up to one of my ballast but a guy told me that is a fire waiting to happen. Please move MODS if there is a place for this :)

I say do it right or don't do it at all.. Some hodge podge job isn't going to do much but leave you homeless and your nanners too for a bit...

A computer power supply will work for 12v....extend the wire leads
Or a small power pack rated for 12v & the power needed for the fan
I used 120v fans for my reef tank so I didn't need a power pac

Finally found a good write up. DUH I have 12V power supplies! Have one from a little LED light from a old kids fish tank. Couldn't think what it was. Thanks

Next time check with Radio Shack. As long as you know the required voltage, amp draw and AC/DC you'll find what you need there. Solder all connections and seal them with shrink tubing and you should have a long lasting fix.
I know this has been answered but I'll do some informative post whoring anyway.
wall wart
Google (http://www.google.com/#hl=en&q=wall+wart+charger&revid=71952800&sa=X&ei=RP5TUNfuKJTs8gSr5oEw&ved=0CGcQ1QIoBw&bav=on.2,or.r_gc.r_pw.r_qf.&fp=480f432b80397adb&biw=1600&bih=878)
if you find the noise too much try dropping the voltage
most 12v fans will start at 7v or higher.
I have some 6" Noctua that literally cannot be heard 5 feet away @10.5v.
here is a writeup with brands and voltages

Look for fans with speed adapters included.
Bearing type is also a noise and service life determinate.
Ball bearing offer longest life and often jet engine sound with increased price.
Sleeve bearings are cheaper and quieter but have a shorter service life and will benefit form oiling peridiocally.
Bearing type determines mounting, eg vertical mounting is only recommended with ball, all others horizontal (shaft) only.
Other types exist which may claim vertical mounting but with mixed results.
I think I've wasted enough space here..... :2738:
