Hello everyone!!!

I am new at growing banana plants. I have been reading up trying to learn. I received 2 small plants, about 6 inches tall. The leaves were green and seemed well watered. However once I planted then in a container the leaves dried out and wilted. I'm afraid they may die. It has been over 100 degrees the past few days and will continue. I think the sun has burned them.
I also received a 4 foot plant, I am afraid the same thing will happen also.

I have been watering them frequently during the day to ensure they don't dry out. I moved them to a somewhat shaded area so they don't die completely.

I would plant them in the ground, but the cooler season will be approaching and I seems foolish. I would like to dig them up to bring thm inside.

Does anyone have any tips or ideas as to what I can do to keep them from dying? Also any ideas what the best fertilizer to use?

Put them in front of a mister and they will do just fine in the 60% sun.. Well mine do. I just transitioned five banana's (2 in the ground), I have 3 mister's.. They do great. :^)

to go from little and green to wilting and dry...you have to ask yourself...either soil, water, sunlight and temp..all play a roll...i dont like to water my young ones to much...if you recived in mail, ask indoor started or outdoor...indoor started you might need to HARDEN them a little....stay out of sun for a year then go out when is 100 and sunny..would you not dry out a little even wilt a touch..change local, soil, water temp and sunlight and see if things do not improve a little....

If they were 6 inches tall, they were probably tissue culture plants that were started in a lab, and then grown for a little while in a greenhouse. Even in a greenhouse, the light level is a lot less than outside, in direct sun. These kind of plants need to be put in shade, for a week or two and gradually acclimated to sunnier locations. However, do nt give up. (Read my post, "Resilient Little Lasiocarpas" in the Ornamental Bananas section.)

Thanks for the info.

With the frequent trips to Puerto Rico, I'm in tropical mood of having the same feel in my backyard.

Yo Raz: I would agree with the last several posts, regarding keeping your babies in the shade.. The same thing happened to two of mine that came in the mail. They were a bit ticked off, I replanted to a one gal container, upon arrival. Kept them out of the direct sun, watered once or twice per week, no fertilizer yet...now all is well. Each has new leaves and seems to have adapted OK. Hope that helps, Welcome aboard..Tom, PDX,OR.
