I just inherited this banana tree in March when I bought the house. I have no idea what it is, but its making bananas for the first time in 6 years accourding to my neighbor.

Thanks so much, well at least I have somewhere to start, since I have no clue. Weird part to me, is that it appears that the tree making the bananas is a pup. So the mother tree (taller one to the right in the pic) never fruited. I cut 3 small pups off the mother recently and replanted them in pots. I would have left them, but they were growing in a direction I really didnt want, since they appear to get very tall. There is one more pup on the other side (same side as the one with bananas) that I left as it is about 3 feet already. And from what ive been reading, after the one with the bananas finishes fruiting, I have to cut the whole thing down. Is that right?

After the plant fruits, you do not need to cut the plant down. It will not continue to grow, but the nutrients in that stem will continue to feed the corm and other plants attached to it. Just let it die back on its own.
