Default Petioles

Recently someone, in the main banana discussion, posted some good pictures showing the difference between sword and water pups.

Could someone post similar clear pictures, showing the different types of petioles? (winged, closed, etc.)

Note that the extent to which the petiole is open or closed can change with the age of a plant. A good example is the photo of the dwarf red that Yug posted. That photo shows a young plant and the petioles are fairly closed. In a mature dwarf red, they would be wide open. That's why people studying bananas record traits like petiole canal type only on certain leaves (3rd leaf from the top) on mature plants.

That's interesting and good to know. I was wondering because they are quite open on my dwarf red, which I thought had to do with them being AAA.

That's exactly right Rob -- look for wide open petioles on mature banana plants with only A genes.

I noticed something very interesting on my Ice Cream (which is probably not). During the midday, the petioles open up a bit, and then they close at night. By the morning, they are fully closed, and then they slowly open up as the day goes on.

On my dwarf Red, I used a picture of the petioles on the largest pup because the top of the main plant is to high to reach, and the leaves are very close together. I can't see it or reach it so I was guessing what it must look like.
