:) This was sold to me as ELE ELE. It does not have the purple coloring on the p-stem but the leaves have the upright growth I believe ELE ELE has ? Anyway looks like it will bloom before long:)

I have a similar one. Can I ask where you bought it? Mine came from Aloha Tropicals. It's about the fastest TC I've ever had, but really no black on it, though it had black bits when it first arrived as a small TC, which was unusual. Mine looks a lot to my like my Namwah that was sold as a Misi Luki.

I bought this from a member. I don't know where he got it.It's a strong growing plant.Root bound in a 30gal pot with 2 large pups and still growing strong
Looks like a flag leaf is on the way so I should know in a month what it is or isn't.

Ele Ele I actually see around occasionally here in Hawaii. Often it will be one of the Hawaiian banana specimens at botanical gardens. Here are some I saw this past week. Mine don't really look like these.

Tony, it might be Ele Ele. I was just looking through the Hawaiian banana book by Kepler and Rust and they say that sometimes Ele Ele has virtually no black/purple -- and you have the conditions for that to happen: low humidity, good sun, a young mat, and dry soil. In terms of petiole canals, the red on petiole edges, etc., it looks like Ele Ele should.

To preserve it's blackness, Puna planters always plant Ele Ele on a dark moonless night.
Found the problem.I planted mine in the middle of the day in bright sun.

I think they also planted them naked. At least your backyard is pretty private, so you might get away with it.

So that's why they choose a dark moonless night :ha:

Here are some pictures of my "Ele Ele." To me, it looks a lot like the Namwah I have. Mine meets most of the conditions mentioned in Kepler & Rust for lacking black/purple--young mat, full sun, close to the coast (1/3 mile). It had little black spots even as a foot tall TC. However, now it has amongst the least amount of black of all my bananas. And no I did not plant it at night naked either. My concern is that it may be a Namwah. Thoughts?

Well, Rob, we're looking at the same book, so I think your guess is as good as mine. I see some Maoli varieties pictured in it that could be your plant (including closed petioles). On the other hand, it does look just like Namwah, too. I think the jury will be out until your plant flowers.
