Your DSP looks great. if the caliper grade is greater than 40mm go ahead and harvest. Just looking at it in the picture though it looks ready.

Andrew -- how much stuff from Cali have you planted in their new home?
Did all the cars make it ok?

Measured several fingers on hands 1 and 2 and got 41 to 44 mm.
Where's the machete?
Where's the mazola?
It's tostonees time tonight!!!!:woohoonaner::drum::nanadrink::0517::08:
This 5 hand bunch weighs in at 25 lbs!
Looks like bunch pruning pays off in finger size and shorter time to harvest!

Wow, that looks great Dan.
Do all DSP produce that many fruit?
There has to be 40 or more.

Thanks Keith. Did a finger count and it was 13, 13, 14, 10, 11 for a total of 61. Starting with the first hand. Too bad I didn't hand prune the Goldfinger. Now I'm gonna get lots of smaller fruit on 13 hands or so.
This is my first bunch of DSP. Got one sucker from Nick and planted it last year.
After dinner I'll post how they came out.:08:

Cutting the lower hands is always foolish unless you are selling the fruit and need to meet minimum requirements.
You will always have a higher yield by keeping all of the hands, and all the fruit taste the same.
Is the DSP a novelty plant ?
I know almost nothing about the DSP but I can see the fruit is too small to sell in Puerto Rico. It seems like a nice backyard plant, you can pick and eat them little by little. That makes it desirable for a small family and if the plant is short makes it even better.
I have the SP and GP, but no grand expectations for them.
Thank's for the info

They do produce a lot of fruit, however they tend to be smaller than maricongo. I have left the extra hands on and the fruit doesn't fill in as well. As far as their origins, DSP is a reversion of enano común to a french type bunch. It has a normal male flower and lots of fruit.

Nick, that's an understatement a 6 oz fruit is tiny and a maricongo is double that size.
Do you know if they are grown commercially?
25 pounds is a good yield for a plantain.
22 pounds is a good yield here for a Maricongo.

Keith ------- DSP is a new cultivar and underwent trials specifically in PR
-- for the PR market, et al. For 10 years or so. Three different elevations were selected and the median zone produced the best. The market requires caliper as well as length --- hence the reason for hand pruning. That way marketable size is achievable -- length and caliper. I have been growing naners long enough that yield by numbers is irrelevant - I'm looking for quality. If you ever had to fight the little West Indian old ladies in the Bravo supermarket for the good plantains on Sat morning you would know what I'm talking about. Nobody wants a runty platano!:0491: :ha:
My DSP first planting is by no means representative of fruit quality. You have to remember that all I have to work with is crappy sugar sand to grow stuff in.
Ironically, mangos do very well here cause they like neglect. Once my new 3 trees reach a good size all they will see is potassium and nutrient/fungal sprays now and then. Cogshall, Pickering and Nam Doc Mai - can't wait. Might add a Maha Chanok later - super flavor. :08:

The first time I read that article I thought it was written by Larry, Curly and Moe. That was written in 1998 and in the past 14 years I have never seen that fruit in market. Maybe what they did on those 3 locations was true, but if it was you would think someone would be growing it commercially here.
Their results
lbs------hands----fruit----avg wt
36.7------3-------50-----11.7 oz
48.2------4-------66-----11.7 oz
51.9------5-------79-----10.5 oz
Normally what I see every day is about
20 lbs 5 hands 26-29 fruit
In Puerto Rico the farmer writes the number of fruit on each stalk.
I would love to grow magic plantains and super plantains.
If more people wrote their results, this site would have much better data.
Maybe Nick can add some real numbers too.

I brought 300 plants. Yes, I'm crazy! They are growing like weeds. I brought four cars. One got scratched up pretty bad. Luckily it was only my 89 Corvette. My wife was correct. "Where are you going to drive a 670 horse power Z06 in Kona". The speed limit varies between 35 and 45. I can do 100 in second! You only live once! Great pictures!! Thanks for sharing.

Do you know if they are grown commercially?
I have some as the Haitians seem to prefer them, they call it banane musque
As far as size and weight of plantains, I'm happy with anything over 8 oz. My bunches usually weight between 25 and 30 lbs.
If you want a plantain like super plantain that produces a lot of fruit I would go with "Maiden Plantain"
