Want Them All

Got the pups from Tony in Sep 2009, and now there's something to show for it. :nanadrink: I got a bunch of different varieties from Tony, the Misi Luki is also having fruits (not pictured). Will there be any more fruits developing from the "football", or should I cut it off now?

You can cut off the male bud now if you want. It won't make any more fruits.

Is there anything I could've done to get more fruits?
Thanks,

Live in the tropics, in an ideal banana growing climate! :ha:
Seriously though, full sun, lots of nutrients, and plenty of water are required for big bunches. If you are giving it that, there's nothing else you can do.
The next pup from this plant that flowers will probably make more bananas even if you do nothing different. That's just how it works with bananas. The "ratoon crops" are bigger than the "plant crops" in banana speak.

The weather is getting colder in my area. The size of the bananas seem to be larger, but they're not looking any more ripe than the 1st photo. Will the cold temps harm the fruits? When, or should I cut them off? These seem to take forever to ripen.
Thanks,

Thanks,
I wouldn't cut them until right before first frost

Yeah - plant the Goldfinger, Namwah or Brazilian.

How does one tell if they have a true dwarf? I have tall Orinoco and I was given a plant that is suppose to be dwarf. Right now its p-stem is a little over 5 ft.

Dwarf plants tend to have shorter petioles and a stockier build, not to mention a shorter pseudostem.

You're telling me -- my Orinocos took a year to ripen!
Like Tony said, the longer you can leave them on the plant without them getting frost damaged, the more they will fill out and ripen properly. If you were only going to get a couple of frosts per winter, it might even be worth wrapping the bunch in a blanket on those night to allow them to stay on the plant to keep filling.

We do get a few days of frost, but this banana plant is in a protected area, no frost in this micro environment. I'll still wrap it up anyways. :bananas_b

Nice plants Want Them All, how did your Dwarf Orinoco bunch turn out?
You're telling me -- my Orinocos took a year to ripen!
Yikes that's a long wait! My DO should probably flower this year, but the prospect of small bunches of inferior fruit that take extra long to ripen has me thinking about digging it out. :rollerbananadone:

They were barely OK for eating fresh, starchy and bland. Sure they were ripe and soft, but the taste left a lot to be desired, sure look pretty though. However, once I fried them, like I do plantains, it was delicious. :bananas_b

My DO is my only 'cooking' banana, and I've never tried baked or fried bananas, so maybe I'll let it stick around.
I wonder how much sooner I can harvest a bunch of DO for cooking as opposed to for eating fresh out of hand-- Half as long? 90% as long? I suspect I'll be able to find discussions about it in the archives here.
