I was reading about blue java bananas in an article and was completely fascinated with the plant. I've been calling my local nurseries here Austin TX but none seem to have one. Can someone help?

Here are a couple of reputable banana plant online sales and there are others on this forum. I have ordered from both places. Beware though, there are some really bad places to order from like TY-TY. Ask about a mail order place first and you will get some good advice.

No, not to me anyway. They do make very good banana ice cream if you freeze them when fully ripe and put them in a blender until they have the consistency of soft serve. I make it without any added sugar and just a touch of soy or coconut milk to get it to blend.

I just went back and looked up where I got my Ice Cream--it was Green Earth. Does anyone know if the Ice Cream from there was true?

Most of the Ice Creams on the mainland US are not the real thing. There are a few places and people that have the real one. San Diego Botanical Gardens has the real deal.

my blue java ended up being something else. I was wondering if there is anyone in the U.S. Who has a real blue java, is willing to sell me a few.

How did you come to that conclusion after only having your plants for about two months (if you bought in Aug 2012)? Did you buy one of the $8 plants?

I have a true blue Java and it stays in a pot. Grows too tall and winds are a problem here. Got it from Wormfarmer and saw it full size and the fruit. Will auction it off one day.

It might be worth a try up here in Santa Clara because the winds aren't too bad here. Cold is a problem here though.

If their plants are tissue cultures originally obtained from AgriStarts (which is the case with pretty much all wholesale nurseries), then it would be Namwah, not the actual Ice Cream.

So I actually researched this. I called Agristarts and then there supplier at a wholesale nursery supplier specializing in bananas in South Florida. The lady I spoke with there stated that they are in fact blue java's and that the variation you see in the plants is due to the plants being in a myriad of different conditions. Soils, nutrients, temperatures etc. Makes sense. What do you think?

caliboy1994

The whole deal with AgriStarts is due to a mislabeling of tissue cultures. There was somehow a mix-up a few years back, and now what AgriStarts is selling as Blue Java is actually Namwah. The two plants are indistinguishable as tissue cultures. Namwah is a great plant, possibly better than the actual Blue Java, so you might as well give it a shot. You won't know for sure until it flowers anyways.

And while soil conditions and abiotic factors do affect the physical characteristics of the plant and its growth, what variety the plant is has to do with its DNA. No matter what the growing conditions are, a plant of the same variety will always produce the same fruit, and will able to be identified based on the characteristics of the flowers and male bud.

That's good that you looked into it. So this variation just happens to be that everywhere they're grown they look and taste like dwarf namwahs? The two fruit are so totally different in taste, shape, peel color, and texture that there is no way this could be a variation issue.

The thanks is for the sarcasm. But you are probably right if that is the case. Man that is pretty bogus that they are selling improperly marked merchandise. Somebody should put a stop to it. But "it is what it is" and that is why we have forum like this in order to clear stuff like that up and get the word out.

Please know the sarcasm is directed at their response and not to you in any way. I'm actually very appreciative that you looked into it and got a response from them as it's clear that someone need to do that. I apologize if my sarcasm towards Agristarts minimized my appreciation of your efforts!

I just cut down 6 ice cream pups this week. What started off as one 3 foot pup turned into 9-10 monsters in 10 months.

I'll probably dig up the whole matt after the fruit ripens. The fruit doesn't taste that great and it pups way too much.

Try dwarf namwah. Another mega-pupper. At least it tastes good. And its a true dwarf.

That is a bunch of Mumbo-Jumbo. My friend in Belle Glade has some asgristarts Ice Creams and they look exactly the same as everyone else's around the country. I have purchased in excess of 2500 plants from agristarts, and when I first started purchasing from them they had some real issues with mixed trays. 6 out of 72 Dwarf NamWahs turned out to be 12-16' tall plants that looked like what they were selling as Ice Cream
