I bought this plantain pup when I was on vacation in south Florida from a man who was growing them in his back yard. I chopped all of the leaves but one and planted it when I got home to Kentucky. It put out the first leaf but it seemed to get hung up before opening all the way. The next leaf was already 6-8" inside the first one keeping it from unfurling. I cut it loose but when it grew to the same point I have the same problem. Now the 3rd leaf has the lower portion of the second wrapped around it. Anyone know what causes this and what I should do to correct it? Should I leave it alone, do surgery or just hack it off and start over?
Also if anyone would like to guess the variety, he called it a Mexican plantain, the mother plant was 12' or so high with a huge diameter p'stem. Thanks for your help.

This is normal for banana pups just establishing and starting to grow. It will grow over it on its own after a few more leafs,do nothing but help new leafs unfurl somewhat without damaging them.

Happy growing!!! :)
