View Full Version : Banana Syrup?

While fondling a couple big banana flowers & blossoms, I couldn't help but notice that the critters were dripping sap all over the leaves below them, with some long droplets making "strings" from the blossom ends.
The little bees & other assorted fans of sweet drippings were visiting steadily, which makes me wonder: "Can ya make syrup outta the stuff?"
The sap (coming from the flowers & blossoms) seems sweeter than maple sap, so it looks like there should be adequate quality, if not quantity.
Just gotta figure out how to harvest the stuff without messing up the plant, so I don't think I'll be tapping the critters using any of the "usual" maple & birch sap collecting techniques.

What ya think??? ;)

Well
I'll keep ya posted, it'll take a few daze to collect sap/nectar& then cook it down (just like making maple syrup). I'm thinking the main reason it's not being done is that not that many familiar with maple syrup production are also growing bananas. (not much overlap of growing areas).
I have to tap "downstream" of the flower; the "regular" sap isn't sweet 'till it makes it to the flowers.
On a side note...
Good thing the hummingbirds aren't bigger, I'm going to steal some of their snacks!
