Did some work in the backyard today, so I thought I'd share some pictures. I plan to have the fence line fully planted eventually. I need a bit more shade back there.

Good way to end the weekend. Looks nice!
Are you sure Gigantochloa atroviolacea is hardy there? I'd love to grow it here in Pensacola, FL but do not think it would survive our Winters. I think mid twenties does it in.

It is listed at 25F. B. vulgaris is listed as more cold sensitive. The vittata has been through two winters in ground and the green one has been through one. They did fine with some protection. I'm hoping we have a mild winter. :ha:

Shouldn't be any need for bunkers with this one (Java Black) it is a clumper and will remain well behaved. There are many desirable bamboos in this category unfortunately most of them are tropical and can't handle our winters.

Two winters ago was significant for us 18F. What was your low? Last year was kind to us. The Bambusa vulgaris 'Vittata' I looked at was listed at 25F-30F and that is too cold for me. I'm looking at Hirose and Alphonse Karr. The Hirose (sport of Oldhamii) is a clumping timber bamboo, has good edible shoots and cold hardy to 15F. The AK is similiar (yellow culm with green stripes, doesn't get as tall or big) to the Vittata, clumps and is cold hardy to 10F-15F.

February 2011 it was between 21 and 25.
I've never looked at Hirose. I have what may be B. odashimae at my parent's house. It's been in the ground for 5 years and take some frost damage but recovers nicely. I also have a large clump of B. ventricosa 'kimmei' and B. multiplex 'Alphonse Karr' in ground for 8 years. They do great ever winter.
If you (or anyone else) is interested in those three, I'm always able to pull divisions.

Very nice! Do you feed the plants with anything, and is the soil in the holes natural or a special mix? :)

My yard is mostly clay, so I mix soil and compost for anything that goes in the ground. I fertilize the bananas with Banana fuel.

Looking good! How are the plants doing that I gave you? Let me know if you need anything else. I should have some seeds of the Bauhinia vine later on if you still want some.
