July of 2010 I received some pups from Hydroid. Actually I receieved a forrest of Bananas from him. Anyway I planted this mat thinking that it would be more of an ornamental and would split my driveway. The planting hole was large and well ammended with compost. It has received very little care since then and has done what I wanted it to do. It is in fairly deep shade and I'm not sure if it every gets direct sunlight. The mat is less than four feet tall. Last week I noticed a half leaf which was followed by the flag and now the bloom is making an appearance. What do you think it is?

I don't know what it is, but it looks pretty cool :)

It looks like Goldfinger to me. Bananas can be really flexible in height at flowering. This probably struggled with shade, etc., but put out enough leaves that it was time to flower, despite being much shorter than usual for this variety. It'll be interesting to see if it makes any fruit. Sometimes they don't when they flower at really short heights.

One clue to a goldfinger is a very shinny pseudostem. Almost mirror like.

You'll find out soon w/ that flower.. I'm thinking it more likely an ornata of some sort as short as it is.. My g/f has the lavender.. :^)

Thanks Ventura,

If it doesn't have fruit I'm ok with that. I planted it here for ornamental purposes. I should have put an Orinioco there and planted the GF where it could have prospered better. I'll probably swap it out now that I know what it is.

Hydroid (Bo) came over Wednesday August 1st and he said it was Goldfinger after looking at it. That gives me two short flowering Goldfingers. Both have had some environmental stressors. I will be taking some pups from both and giving them a better spot in the Sun with fertilization and irrigation. Maybe next year I will be able to say if these will naturally grow short and fruit. I would be happy if they grow to about six feet and then set a bloom with fruit.
