Bought 3 of these a few week ago- I am thinking they are musa basjoo- any thoughts. I am in zone 9- they seem to be doing quite well thus far- any idea if they will produce pups, or is propagation from the "death flower" seeds only? thanks in advance. Ken

Looks like a Basjoo to me. Yes, Basjoo will produce a lot of pups.

awesome- thanks- the guy I bought it from said that he would wait for the tree to flower (7-8 yrs) he would then let it (the whole tree) die off, and collect the seeds- he never mentioned the pups- I know my ethiopian bananas produce pups, so this is what I was hoping for. I am assuming this will take some time (to produce pups) as the tree matures. thanks again.

It shouldn't take that much time to produce pups if you water it and fertilize it correctly. In your zone, you could expect a bloom in 1.5 to 2 years. In fact, I think you should try your luck at some edible bananas. :)

I was just researching California Gold- this seems like a first great (edible) option- any thoughts. thanks again. Ken

Looks like an ensete ventricosum to me, a cousin of bananas (musa). If it is a basjoo you will see lots of pups soon, but if it is an ensete it will not pup, which is why he mentioned cultivation from seeds

Well, it could be Ensete Ventricosum. I said Basjoo because I assumed it has a deficiency of some sort. Now that I think of it, it looks more like EV.

And try Dwarf Namwah, that's a great tasting edible that will do well in your area.

Ibet you can get it to pup if you destroy the main growing point and also cut it off at the ground like I do with the ensete maurelii. But you might not want to destroy such a nice plant.

Can Dwarf Namwah go up to -8C (17.6 degrees)?
